Bitter Is the New Black by Jen Lancaster (2006, Paperback)

I read this book for my book club and enjoyed it. I was a little shocked in the beginning with just how self-centered the author could be, but after the hilarious unemployment office fiasco, I really began to sympathize with her. AS a whole, this book was funny and well written. There are many typos in the book, but if you ignore those, I think it's a good read. And if you were one of the many dot.com execs who found yourself unemployed when the boom was over, I think you'll really enjoy this book.

When I first read the sleeve and realized this book is a biography of sorts, I was kind of wary; however, just a chapter into it and I was HOOKED. Like can't-put-it-down-except-to-pee hooked.

Jen is hilarious, sarcastic, smart, and has impeccable and expensive taste.

You journey with her as she's a (self-described) overpaid sales manager. Her biggest problem in the whole world is wanting to buy a swanky, uncomfortable couch but not wanting to use her boyfriend's money and trying to come up with a few thousand dollars herself.

Then 9/11 hits and her job crumbles just like the towers. The entire job market is pathetic. Jen still has a chip on her shoulder and it takes a long time for her to realize that this is just the beginning.

I highly recommend this!

I purchased this book after becoming enthralled with her newest book: Such A Pretty Fat. The writing is clever, stimulating and she presents dead on summarizations of people and situations. This book did NOT disappoint. I have been stuck in the murder/mystery genre, and was compelled to purchase SUCH A PRETTY FAT after reading a small review in People Magazine. I could NOT put this one or her other two books down. The wit, and humor are "laugh out loud" hysterical. The book is slightly peppered with a few choice words, but none are gratuitous just to write them on paper, and more to emphasize her point. I could envision her as my newest best friend, as I could completely relate to EVERYTHING she writes about. My only disappointment was that she wasn't sitting in my living room telling me these hysterical situations personally. Her humor may NOT be for everyone, but if you are sarcastic, narciassistic, and have a few pounds to spare that you aren't completely freaked out about-and can find humor in-then I think that you will ADORE this book as much as I have.

I have read a book by this author in the past and really loved it! this one is promising to be just as good or better..

I love Jen Lancasters brutal honesty. I mean really - 99% of us "think" this way, we just don't have the opportunity to put it in writing! Every ex-sorority girl - and every girl with sharp whit and a bit of attitude should read this, just so you know you're not alone!!!

I loved this book! It started off a bit slow (with the exception of Jen calling her friend a "whore!" repetitively in the first chapter which made me laugh out loud on a airplane) but I was ROLLING by the end. Being a total smart ass myself (and never hearing the end of it from my husband and random locals) I adored her attitude through all the hills and valleys of her experiences. It was a shot in the arm and a refreshing perspective on priorities, relationships, hope, rejection, denial, acceptance and the little "wins" that make life worth fastening the seat belt. I read several reviews and decided to purchase this book after my friend sent me the link to her website. jennsylvania.com. This lady is doing and saying everything most of us wish we had the guts to do. It really puts life into perspective. Some days you have it all and some all you have is the hope that one day you will have it all again!!! I Highly recommend this book and author!!!

If you like sarcasm, you will appreciate this book, otherwise don't get it. I enjoyed this book and found it to be an easy read and very enjoyable. My only critism, I didn't care for all of the "references" on the bottom of the page to explain little details of some of the dialog. Didn't bother reading it, too small of print and not necessary to the story. Pefect for the pool side and should be on your summer reading list.

Though it starts off really slow- I could've done without the almost 100 pages of her most arrogant days and the footnotes got excessive- it was quite funny and the tragedy/epiphany that the author realizes is one we could all use in these tough economic times. Not exactly my cup of tea, but it was enjoyable.

Do you want to laugh... feel good... say, "yes!! I know what you mean!!" Read anything by Jen Lancaster and you will do just that. She is funny, witty, and she's someone that you would just like to hang out with, after reading one of her books.

I love Jen's sense of humor. She is so over-the-top and ridiculous, which makes the book even more amusing.

Did not like the author's self involved whiney style, so totally self centered, I cant finish this book and am sorry I spent the money.

I had just gotten fired (unjustly, I might add!) when a friend of mine gave me this book and told me it would lighten up my now very long days- well it didn't! I went through this wonderful book in about 2 days- laughing the whole time! It was a pick me up just when I needed it! Jen Lancaster is funny- smart and has a sarcastic humour that makes you want to read this book out loud to share with everyone around you!
Jen- if you read reviews- I am truly one of your biggest fans! If YOU have not read this book yet- oh my gosh- what are you waiting for? I am now reading the 2nd with plans on the 3rd there after... taking me a little bit longer, as I am now a working girl again (and an extra 20 lbs to show for my unemployed period!!)

I ordered this book over a month ago and still have not received it. Further, I have written several emails to the seller inquiring about it and haven't received any response. Terrible.

Looved the book, great read, witty and hilarious at times! Literally read it in a couple days b/c I had to know what happened next. I immediately purchased the next book in the series and am enjoying it just as much!

Absolute side splitting, tell-it-like-you-mean-it, must read about a woman's real life journey from the top to the bottom. You will fall in love with her witty husband and spoiled rotten dogs. I enjoyed it so much that I can't stop recommending it to others.

LAUGH OUT LOUD funny. Read this with a friend so at least one other person you know will not think you are crazy. Perfect. Love it. Love her. FUNEEEEE stuff!

A friend of mine dragged me into a book store a few weeks ago so she could find her latest installment of some nerd book. While I groan and try futiley to find something trashy to entertain myself with while she squeals with delight over her dork-books (seriously, who gets giddy over calculus???), my ever fading attention is caught by a tantalizing title - Bitter is the New Black. I pick it up and begin reading the cover and find myself giggling as I flip through the pages and squealing like my friend. OM-friggin-G, I HAD to have this book!!! I bought this one and Bright Lights, Big Ass. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!! Could not put it down. If you do not agree these are the best books ever, I will fight you! LOL

My only complaint with this book is that I had read it sooner! Jen is hilarious and leaves you with one question when you finish....."When is she writing another?" Soon I hope!
