What happens when a nice guy gets a Russian mail order bride? Things turn out even worst then the most pessimistic detractor could have predicted. Well, it's not that bad, this isn't a Takashi Miike film. But when you have to rob the bank where you have spent years building up a reputation for being the reliable guy, and then it turns out the poor sweet helpless Russian bride who dosn't even speak English does speak English and was in on the con from the start, that's pretty bad. You may think I've given a lot away, but there is more twists and turns to the story. You havn't found out anything yet.
The thing about this movie I really loved though, is not the constant twisting of the plot, but the way the characters communicate. Because the banker and the Russian bride supposedly don't speak each other's langauge for the first part of the movie they still communicate a lot with the kind gestures they make towards one another, and thier body movements, and the way they look at each other. And sense they've both spent all this time assessing each other without being able to verbally communicate, when they finally can, they both have some rather harsh criticisms that they've been keeping pent up inside.
I'm not that big a fan of Nicole Kidman, but she gives a really stunning performance, and I think if the role had been played by anyone else, it would just be an OK or pretty good film.
So watch this movie. I guarantee you won't want those two hours of your life back afterwards.
