The Brooklyn trio follows up its impressive debut EP with this full-length album of gentle three-keyboard sonic massage. The cheesy drum machine and breezy vocals create a wistful atmosphere that support delicate, sweetly droning melodies, but the music is more complex than first meets the ear. "Sad Song" juxtaposes a percolating Casio beat and breathy singing with a somber, minor-key riff that makes sadness seem downright pretty. "Fallen Snow" is a jaunty number that rocks harder than the typical song here, but also features the most baby-doll-like vocal of the album and a mesmerizingly off-kilter bridge. By playing with expectations this way, Au Revoir Simone makes their deceptively simple formula compelling.
