The Big Chill (DVD, 1999, 15th Anniversary Edition - Widescreen)

A story of a group of college friends meeting after many years for a friends funeral.During the weekend, the different lives of each individual unfolds. What they do in their present lives, how they wish they could have changed some things about their lives and reminiscing about college days together and the bond they still have. The music is from the 60's throughout the movie and is a toe tapping experience and makes you want to get up and dance with them. (If you are from the 60's era. A great movie and plot that makes you feel good after you have seen it.

Ok, I'm over 50. This was my generation. I went to college the same time that these people did in the 1960s and 1970s. But what do I have in common with them? Not much.

However, I did like the music and still do. And I sort of like the movie.

We have a star-studded movie all about meeting again in the 1980s at the funeral of a college friend who has committed suicide. (Kevin Costner, in an unseen role. He was clipped out in the editing room.)

The friends are: Kevin Kline and Glen Close who are happily married
and the hosts of the get-together, Tom Berenger who is a TV star, William Hurt who is an injured Vietnam vet and now is impotent and feels a failure, Mary K. Place who is a successful lawyer but a failure at attracting a husband, Jo Beth Williams who brings her husband but is still trying to catch Tom Berenger, and Jeff Goldblum who is the nerd but was accepted into the cool group. Only Meg Tilly is thoroughly out of place as the deceased's girlfriend, but she tries.

Bonding again is the theme of the movie. They thoroughly have a good time while we get to hear many of the 1960s soul and rock hits. They cook meals, play football, dance the way we did in the 1960s, watch old movie reels of themselves, go for walks, and then go home to the various lives that they have created. They laugh and cry about the way they were.

The climax of the movie is Glen Close convincing Kevin Kline to have sex with Mary K. Place to get her pregnant or at least help her out of the frustrating dilemma that she feels that she is in.

The movie was nominated for several Academy Awards inclucing Glen Close as Best Supporting Actress, Best Writing, and Best Picture. It won none.

Many of us baby boomers can identify with at least one of these people. It's also good to reminisce. Happy viewing!

Although this is not a family movie, if you grew up in the 60's & 70's this is a movie you can take to heart. Let's you go back in time & remember not only with it's own characters but the excellent soundtrack takes you right back too!

Great movie, great cast, fantastic story about the post-college years. Overall, the film is worth watching and it has great replay value.

I was in my 20s when the movi was made. I thought it had a great ensemble cast, and it was a break out movie for some of our biggest stars.I bought it because my wife had never seen it.

There is a reason this movie is a classic. What a great cast, story and sound track! I'll watch this one over more than once!

Being a baby boomer myself I can totally relate to the characters and the sound track of "The Big Chill". I bought it because it's a movie that I can watch over and over. The characters are realistic and the setting supurb. It's one of my all time favorites.

I have loved this movie for many years, and watch it everytime it was on . Now i will enjoy it anytime i want. It has such a good story behind it of freinds from college and how thier lives went after school, and who stayed incontact with which ones. The loss of one of thier peers sends them into to alot of remembering and some not so good times too. Just a really good movie over all. I recommend it to all adults.

and songs and some dancing.

If your 50ish, this is the ultimate movie for you, we all have old friends that were major influnces in our lives, and this was such a great movie to showcase those friends. Of course, the music of that era was the greatest ever made as well, and as a DJ, those same songs get young and old up dancing. I even have my kids convinced that i really do want the song by the Stones "You cant always get what you want" i want it played at my funeral because aint it the truth. Not a thing negative me be said about this film. Well, buy and watch it every few years like i do and 'REMEMBER THE TIME'

The "Big Chill." Not a title to make you want to go out and see the movie, or one that inspires you to purchase a DVD of it, huh? Doesn't sound like much, does it? But...........this movie packs a punch, transports you back in time, makes you feel good because of the music and the storyline that friends can stay friends even through long distances of time and space, and differences that are inevitable. Covering two different time periods, the 60's and the 80's, the actors and actresses give a superb rendition of the way life was in both periods. The music of the 60's grabs you and makes you want to sing and dance along with it, a timeless music that will live on forever. The humorous episodes during the movie create a feeling of togetherness and camaraderie that is reminiscent of days gone by. The actors, Jeff Goldblum, Kevin Kline, Tom Berenger and William Hurt and the actresses' Glenn Close, Mary Kay Place, Meg Tilly and JoBeth Williams create a believable experience of what life was like "in the good ole days." It is just a plain fun and feel good movie that I can watch over and over and over whenever I need that "feel good" kind of fix. The only negative I have about this movie is: it didn't last long enough - but then neither did that period of time. I searched for and bought this movie because of what it says to me - that good friends are PRICELESS!! You can't go wrong purchasing this movie - either you will love it as much as I do, or if you don't, then someone in your life will and you can give it to them as a gift. Either way you are a winner.

I love this movie mostly because of the music--takes me back to my younger years. But I also like how the movie depicts the people and the thinking of that era. It's a movie that makes you stop and think about yourself and your relationships.
