OK. Five months late, I can't say it's perfect, but I have more or less conquered it. I still think it has a mind of its own, and am never sure that it will be both hot and frothy. I solved the leaking problem with the help of another eBayer, who suggested that I rub some oil on the gaskets before screwing them together. I no longer have Mt Vesuvius on my stove top. Now, If I could only get it both hot and frothy....Anybody else has suggestions?

One of the best cups you will have

I love my Mukka maker. It did leak at first, but only because *I* was not firmly attaching both ends together. Once I figured that out, it has been smooth latte and cappuccino sailing. I don't believe there are any inherent design flaws with the Mukka. I have been buying these as gifts (along with a can or two of Illy coffee) for friends in the USA and they too have had no problems once they get through the first few pots.

A few tips I found helpful: Once you hear the frothing sounds, you can turn down the heat just a little to control the frothing and the flow of the coffee. Leave the heat on until the frothing noise dissapaites, then remove from the heat. This will ensure that all the steam pressure is released. After my cappuccino is done I always release and remove the steam valve, rinse it well, and then fill the milk chamber with warm water. This makes cleaning it later in the day a breeze. Also, the directions recommend taking the Mukka completely apart and cleaning it well after 30 pots. This is important because powdery coffee granules will eventually build up on the inside of the filter and not allow the coffee to rise to the top chamber.

I have had the best results using either 1-2% milk or using vanilla soy milk regarding froth. I have tried unsweetened soy milk and it did not froth well.

An aside: let me say that I am shocked at how expensive the Mukka maker is in the USA compared to Italy. Sure, they are made in Italy, not the USA but $89 USD seems excessive. I bought my Mukka for 28 Euros and it included 2 large Bialetti Cappuccino cups. Also interesting to note is that replacement parts and gaskets for the Mukka and all other Moka makers are much easily found here in Italy (usually at a grocery or home store) than in the USA.

Stovetop Expresso Maker Makes Me a Believer!
Review created: 01/11/08

Purchased the Bialetti Mukka for my wife who is a total St@&%uck$ junkie. Really had my doubts about the effectiveness of a stovetop unit that also foams the milk at the same time. Actually quite amazed what a decent job it did. I spent a lot of time as a bartender and barista making lots of expressos/capps/lattes, and everything in between, and next to that this is like hitting the snooze bar on your alarm clock. The Mukka combines a double boiler and pressure cooker method to heat the water in the bottom part of the base and use the pressure from the heated water to force it through the expresso in the middle and steam milk in the upper part. Won't make the best cup you've ever had, but it's really handy and convienient for the single drinker. Don't plan to serve more than 1 or 2 people at one time with this, because of the time involved. By the time it took to make the third latte, the first one would be cold. Does not make the best froth. You are actually drinking a latte rather than a cappucino. Hope this helped.

  Disappointed

I've TRIED, over and over. I've read, reread, and read again the directions. I've tried cappuccino and latte. I've even tried with just water. The coffee doesn't rise into the upper chamber unless I undo the valve (and you can imagine the mess that makes!
Am I doing something wrong? Or is my unit faulty?
It seemed like such a great idea, but the result of my having bought it is that I'm using my espresso machine, heating milk in the microwave and using a stick blender to froth it. Not what I'd had in mine!

f/u. I contacted the manufacturers and got a new valve. That was the problem. It works fine now.

Bialetti's Mukka Express fits the bill for what it does
Review created: 02/09/07

We saw these in Italy in 2006. The locals we talked to didn't know what it was, so we didn't want to get one then. After returning we checked it out on line and decided to get one. Of course, eBay was the place to go, and we weren't disappointed.
The Mukka Express showed up in good condition. It's fairly straight forward and easy to use, but reading the directions is a must, and watching the demo video on the Bialetti web site is a great idea. It doesn't work exactly like their other coffee makers, so some care is needed to make sure you don't make a big mess. The cappuccinos came out excellent, as did the lattés.
Drawbacks - It can be messy. If you get too much either milk or water when making a cappuccino then it will overflow when it froths. It only makes enough for two, if you use the regular cappuccino cups. We don't, which means it only makes enough for one. Because of this we usually simply make espressos and warm our own milk. Otherwise it has to be cooled and cleaned quickly in order to make a second or third pot. This can easily be done though, by holding the machine under cold water until the metal cools enough to handle. Another concern is that it can get stuck together pretty tight as the air inside contracts. The button should be removed immediately after serving in order to avoid this. That way the pressure can stay the same as outside.
The Bialetti Mukka Express does exactly what they say it will do, and is a great little machine. It's fairly straight forward, and the ladies who have seen it think it's cute, for whatever that's worth to you (especially the cow design - though it doesn't clean as easily). I can heartily recommend them for the coffee lover. If you're making coffee for a crowd though, then I'd recommend Bialetti's other coffee machines and a good milk warmer and frother.

First, I did not receive the item. After two weeks, I sent several emails with no response back. I decided to do a dispute request. After 30 days from the end date of the auction, I received a package and a email. I was terribly disappointed. The item was USED(water deposits on the inside) not new and the product was not the same as described in the auction. I had to spend $13 to mail the piece of trash back and I am still out the orginal price I paid. I will never do business with this customer or their website http://mydvdtrader.com/

When you consider the cost of one at Starbucks OR the cost of a "real" espresso, combined with the mega-hassle of cleaning same - this is a steal! For some reason, my prior ones have lasted less than a year each, but again, still worth it. My ceiling has been sprayed with "cafe latte" a few times but c'est la vie. All in all, the best.

  Solution to leaky Mukkas
Review created: 02/26/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I had the same problem as the previous reviewer for awhile (coffee leaking all over no matter how tight I screw the two parts or how clean I keep them). I found a solution: put a tiny bit of olive oil on the rubber ring; this will help form a perfect seal b/w the two surfaces and stops all leaks.

This little guy is amazing! I've been using it everyday since I bought it, and am thrilled with the quality of the drinks. Yes, you do need to take your time when using it (even then- less than 5 minutes) and NOT overfill the coffee. If you follow the directions carefully, you will be rewarded! There's also a helpful video that shows how the Mukka works on the Bialetti website.

  My Husband Loves It

My husband wanted to get an espresso machine, but with the time and equipment it takes to make, I knew he wouldn't use it much. This Mukka Express was a perfect option for him. It is easy to use and can make a cup of cappuccino in five minutes. Just add the coffee and milk and put it on the stovetop. Makes a great cup of coffee. It does only make 2 small cups, so it would be nice if it made a little more. Very cute design. Small and easy to store. My husband has had a lot of fun with his new Mukka!

This little machine works wonders. We used to spend $8 per day buying coffe from an expresso place. Now we make it at home for a fraction of the price. It pays for itself.

Downside: it does leak if there is coffe grounds between the rubber seal and the bottom part. Be aware of that.

We also wish it would make about twice as much in one time. We have to brew twice to get two big cups of coffe.

But, it's worth it for the excellent taste!

Love the machine! Easy to use, easy cleanup. Works on my stove top, nothing to plug in. I use it every time we have company. Everyone loves it. I'm buying everyone one for Christmas. Easy, fun and fast! Love it so much hardly a day goes by that I don't use it for myself. Wish I had found this machine earlier!

Homemade cappuccino is good and simple. It's not the super-duper cappuccino we have in our favorite cafe. Well, it shouldn't be. It's tasty in our own way.
The machine itself is very attractive and nicely done. Except the aerator (valve) - some of it's parts are plastic and seem to be not very durable.
All in all it's one of the best utensils we've got.
Kudos to Bialetti.

Love the Cappa, pot is a little smaller than the stovetop model but this is much more convenient. Brews evenly, smoothly, and provides an excellent froth. I plan to take it to the office for personal use there and may purchase another one for home.

  Mine was a disaster.
Review created: 10/04/09
by:

I bought the machine because I was tempted by the idea that I could make my own cappucchino at home. The machine that I tried leaked all over our stove on every attempt. We could not get the two pieces to screw down tightly no matter what we did. My husband saw burr marks on the screw-in portion of the pot. In the reviews that I have read, it seems that people either love this machine or hate it. I have to think that it's a quality control issue with the company. The other thing I noticed is that you can't control the quantity that you make. It's all or nothing. Maybe try one at a store and make sure it screws down tightly before you buy it.

Bialetti Mukka - we love it, just not the cow print :)
Review created: 02/21/09
by:

We love this little device! The first one that we bought at BB&B was the cow print which of course was "cute". After a while the paint started peeling off in patches and it looked really ugly, so I was thrilled to get the one without the cow print (stainless steel looking).

It's very easy to use, though it takes a few tries to determine what heat to set your stove to. We've settled on 7 out of 10 on our glass-top electric range. We also use canned milk instead of regular milk, and it makes for a very rich cappuccino. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

  Great little product

I love my mukka...it's easy fast and makes a great cup of latte. Only thing for me is I like my coffee stronger (3 shots) so it's alittle lite for my taste but my husband loves it because I can make him a latte in no time. We have an espresso maker but it takes time to make a latte with it. For something quick the mukka is great,

  Electric Bialetti Mukka Express
Review created: 07/05/08

It makes a really good latte or expresso drink but you have to make sure everything is screwed on tight!! If not, the coffee drink will leak out from the bottom. Follow directions well. It's nice to make your own drink and not pay $5 someplace else. I wish the pot was larger though; it only makes 8 ounces at a time.

0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought it because Williams Sonoma was always out of stock si I figured I'd turn to ebay. The product looked good and seller included the "how to use" dvd.
This product had a top and bottom which had to be seperated to insert water and espresso. The tricky part was screwing it back on. Every time I used it the espresso would begin to seep out. It was frustrating. I attempted one more time and all this espresso liquid exploded all over my stove and onto my nice white ceiling. Huge mess and my ceilingneeds to be repainted. I just threw it out. I think this item was an older model and the new one that is out is probably improved. Or maybe I was just sent a defective model. It only worked once for me.
I make coffee everyday so I know the problem was not on my behalf. It was just a bad item.
