Album Notes
Liner Note Author: Kevin Spacey.
Recording information: Abbey Road, London, England.
Kevin Spacey harbored a longtime fascination with Bobby Darin that ultimately pushed him to direct and star in BEYOND THE SEA, a biopic about the singer. Taking things a step further, Spacey--known as a talented mimic--sang a host of Darin classics in the film, as captured on the soundtrack album. While Spacey's vocal impression isn't exactly blindfold-test material (his tone isn't as big and brassy as Darin's), he does a far more impressive job than anyone might have expected. The authentically recreated arrangements match Spacey step for step, from the rock & roll of "Splish Splash" to the swinging staple "Mack the Knife" to the folk-rock of the Tim Hardin-penned "If I Were a Carpenter." The latter is an especially interesting study in pop-cultural evolution, as Darin's original version was virtually a carbon copy of Hardin's, and Spacey engages in some third-party meta-interpretation. Ultimately, the goal here seems to be that of paying tribute to Darin, and Spacey comes across as a completely earnest acolyte of the late, chameleonic vocalist.

Editorial Reviews
Backed by John Wilson's 73-piece orchestra, [Spacey's] ordinary voice delivers an extraordinary performance. - Grade: B+

Kevin Spacey's Amazing Impersonation of Bobby Darin
    Review created: 02/06/09(updated 02/07/09)

John Wilson's 73-piece orchestra performs 18 of Bobby Darin's hit songs while Kevin Spacey sings, literally performing a grand impersonation of the once great performer. Spacey also directs "Beyond the Sea," a biopic of Darin's career & life. These 18 tracks were recorded in Abbey Road studio, London, England.

When I studied the filmography & first realized that Kevin Spacey had done all of the singing, I was floored! Who knew Spacey had this facet of talent up his sleeve? I remain impressed by Spacey's rendition of Darin on the following tracks:

    1) Hello Young Lovers
    2) Once Upon a Time
    3) Fabulous Places
    4) Simple Song of Freedom
    5) Mack the Knife
    6) Beyond the Sea
    7) By Myself & When Your Lover has Gone
    8) Some of These Days
    9) Change
    10) If I Were a Carpenter
    11) Artificial Flowers
    12) That's All
    13) Dream Lover
    14) Splish Splash
    15) Lazy River
    16) Charade
    17) As Long as I'm Siging
    18) The Curtain Falls

I should mention that the film also necessarily includes at least a partial biopic of Sandra Dee because she was Bobby Darin's wife, who never remarried after his untimely death~

      Kevin Spacey blows me away!
    Review created: 11/07/06

After seeing the movie "Beyond the Sea," and learning that Kevin Spacey, the talented actor who played Bobby Darin actually did ALL the SINGING in the movie, I was totally blown away. Darin's family allowed Spacey to re-record Darin's hits at the same studio, with many of the same musicians. And Spacey, talented actor we all know from such movies as "The Usual Suspects" and "Garden of Good and Evil" reveals a tremendous voice talent that we'd not seen till now. I loved it!
