E.A.R. is a loosely knit collective centered on Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, a co-founder of Spacemen 3 with Spiritualized's Jason Pierce. For this second E.A.R. album, the crew also features Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine, Eddie PrTvost of '60s experimentalists AMM, and Kevin Martin of the modestly named God. BEYOND THE PALE is basically what you might hear if you were to take away the actual songs from a Spacemen 3 or MBV record.
Hypnotic waves of heavily treated guitars, keyboards, percussion, and saxophone endlessly unravel and re-knit themselves without regard to melody or song structure. The album is broken into six pieces-"Beyond The Pale," "The Calm Before," "In The Cold Light Of Day," "The Calm Beyond, "Dusk," and "The Circle Is Blue"-all titled for thematic unity, in the time-honored prog tradition. There is no middle ground on BEYOND THE PALE. You will either find this album incredibly boring or totally enthralling.
