BETWEEN DAYLIGHT AND DARK is the first album that New Orleans resident Mary Gauthier wrote and recorded after Hurricane Katrina nearly destroyed the city in 2005. Recorded live in the studio by producer and musician Joe Henry, with the barest minimum of overdubs, this is Gauthier at her most unguarded and emotionally expansive. The songs range from character studies of the down and out to subtle protest songs, all of them feeling intensely personal in a way that many similar singer-songwriters never quite manage. Highlights include the deeply affecting "Last of the Hobo Kings."
Editorial Reviews [S]he wants us to know the people in her songs, intimately and on first listen....'Can't Find The Way' and 'Same Road' are instantly memorable. No Depression
3 stars out of 5 -- Gauthier's unflinching lyrical vision and her attention to musical detail make this a dark, stomach-tightening experience. Q
Gauthier's vocals are unusually expressive....Every one of these songs haunts, touches the heart, and feels like an old friend. Dirty Linen
4 stars out of 5 -- [With an] observational style echoing the best hobo folk-blues of John Hammond....This is a dark journey into worlds peopled by the lost and damaged. Uncut
