The first several tracks on this typically excellent two-disc Rhino anthology are late-'50s recordings starring Dale's guitar and voice (yes, voice) in standard rockabilly settings. While not redefining the form, they're pretty good songs and of genuine historical interest. Naturally, the bulk of BETTER SHRED THAN DEAD is devoted to Dale's magnificent early '60s surf-guitar sides. No matter how many times you hear this blend of speed, reverb, and odd musical touches--"Misirlou" is actually a common Greek folksong, and a version of "Hava Nagila" works just as well--it never fails to delight. Less-renowned later material, including a duet with Stevie Ray Vaughan on the Chantays' "Pipeline"--Dale shreds the upstart, naturally--is nearly as good. The collection also includes plenty of great outtakes and alternate versions.
Editorial Reviews ...this two-CD package manages to sift thruogh his catalog--including early rockabilly vocal sides and ill-advised novelty tunes--to make a persuasive case for Dale's genius. Entertainment Weekly (06/13/1997)
