Album Notes Personnel includes: Luther Vandross, Gregory Hines (vocals); Paul Jackson, Jr. (guitar); Marcus Miller, Nat Adderley, Jr. (keyboards, synthesizers); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Lisa Fischer, Tawatha Agee, Cissy Houston, David Lasley (background vocals). Producers: Luther Vandross, Jacque Fred Petrus, Marcus Miller. Recorded between 1980 & 1989. Includes liner notes by Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Arsenio Hall & Luther Vandross. This 1989 double-disc compilation was the first Luther Vandross best-of on the market, and it is a faithful representation of the key tracks from the artist's first decade as a performer. Naturally, Vandross's '90s work is not represented, and Vandross had recorded so much quality material during the '80s that even this 20-track set omits some gems. With those reservations aside, BEST OF LUTHER VANDROSS... THE BEST OF LOVE is a veritable case study in smooth '80s R&B, including such smash hits as "Here and Now," "Never Too Much," and the Bacharach-David classic "A House Is Not a Home." Vandross really only sings about love, but with a voice this beautiful and a delivery this passionate, who's complaining? Fans who want a compilation of his '90s work as well should pick up ONE NIGHT WITH YOU...THE BEST OF LOVE, VOL. 2, which, together with this set, provides a comprehensive overview of Vandross's magic. Review created: 09/10/00 by: posthoughts -- a member of Epinions Pros: You are given what you paid for...perfection. Cons: You don't know what you're missing if this is not in your collection. This opinion can be summed into one word, ENCORE! I didn't really know which album to write this opinion under until I realized most of the songs on this album were highlighted in his performance Sept. 7th at Jones Beach. The man and his music is extraordinary. Anyone who follows Luther is well aware that he is rated as a 10+ ballad singer. Any album you purchase will leave you longing to purchase another. This album, as well as all of his productions, encompasses what it takes to be a well rounded performer. The songs touch the heart, soul and mind. It takes only a moment to hear your own experience conveyed through both lyrics and instrumental arrangements. As the words of each song are expressed they are highlighted by the emphasis of each played note or beat. In harmony he grabs your inner soul until you feel his musical expression enwrap what you have dared to release. During the overture of each piece you release what emotions you knew could only be touched by your inner thoughts. As each song fades to end you are gently placed where you began feeling relieved and refreshed. Only a true artist can touch you like this. Even his up beat songs fill your need to party and enjoy memorable moments. Luther Vandross is a true artist. Luther fulfills your musical needs. Luther, Luther, Luther....ENCORE!!!!
