Recorded between 1956 and 1964. Includes liner notes by Bret Primack, Geoffrey Mark Fidelman and James Gavin. For eight years, between 1956 and 1964, Ella Fitzgerald teamed with legendary producer Norman Granz to record a number of albums paying tribute to such noted songwriters as Duke Ellington, Jerome Kern, Howard Arlen, and the team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. Collectively known as "the songbooks," these recordings are one of the cornerstones of Fitzgerald's legend as an interpretive songwriter, and the sumptuous three-disc box set BEST OF THE SONGBOOKS brings the most exciting and important of those recordings to a new audience. Dispensing with the single-author focus of the original albums, BEST OF THE SONGBOOKS mixes and matches songwriters across the 48 tracks. Many of the songs here are oft-covered standards, and some of Fitzgerald's performances are definitive, such as her treatments of Rodgers and Hart's "Lover" or Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss." It's the lesser-known songs, however, that hint at greater treasures to be discovered in these songwriters' oeuvres.
