Album Notes Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Includes liner notes by John Lennon, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jim Morrison, Phil Spector, Joe Cocker, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, Priscilla Presley. Was Elvis Presley really the artist of the (20th) century? A convincing case can certainly be made for the idea, and this album, despite the fact that it's no more definitive than any other single-disc Elvis best-of, does a pretty good job at limning the argument. If you want be a purist about it, given the dearth of country tracks, this sells Elvis's astonishing stylistic versatility a bit short, but what's here is unarguably some of the greatest pop music of the second half of the 20th century. From the almost folky primitivism of early rockabilly on "That's All Right" to the shamelessly over-the-top orchestral pomp of "An American Trilogy," Elvis is a larger-than-life figure, and ARTIST OF THE CENTURY an appropriately larger-than-life compilation. | Find errors in the product description?
