When his debut appeared in 1968, James Taylor was the first non-Beatle to release an album on the Fabs' Apple label. Since then, his long, consistent career has been a model of integrity and craft. While he hasn't ventured very far afield as say, his contemporary Joni Mitchell has), Taylor has maintained the gentle, introspective, archetypal singer-songwriter sound he defined over his first couple of albums. Eschewing quantity for quality, he remains a perennial favorite even with infrequent releases of new material. THE BEST OF JAMES TAYLOR is the first collection to combine tracks from his three labels, rounding the set out with the newly recorded "Bittersweet." Though Taylor was among the first to usher in the era of autobiographical singer-songwriters, he also had a number of hits covering others (from Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet it Is" to Carole King's "You've Got a Friend)." The 20 songs here cover the arc of his career, serving to remind that not only do his early recordings remain essential components to the soundtrack of their era, but that Taylor remains one of the smoothest, most agile singers to emerge from the singer/songwriter boom. | Find errors in the product description? Reviews I bought the CD about a month ago. I have really enjoyed listening to the music. It is very calming and relaxing. The only thing I was surprised at was how many songs I have never heard before. I bought it because it had about 5 songs I recognize and love. But I guess I thought I would recognize more songs because it is the "Best of" his music. Review ID: 10000000007406351 Was this review helpful? Report this review I like the CD very much. It arrived in excellent condition, plays as though it was brand new and I saved more than if I had bought it used at the CD store. Review ID: 10000000006932843 Was this review helpful? We saw him this summer and this was pretty much his line up. It is the very best of sweet baby James all grown up--and he still sounds sweet as ever. The songs include favorites like Fire and Rain, Up On The Roof, Carolina On My Mind. They are classics and he sings them like he's singing to a friend. It would make a thoughtful gift. Cons: Yeh - you've probably got all of the other "greatest" hits, right? Music is a huge part of my life. I know, there are gasps being heard across the nation with this revelation :). I appreciate lots of kinds and types of music and whether it's made by a human, a machine, a fat man (aka Lou Perlman), I really don't care. This is one area where me and my fellow music lovers have heated discussions. I think music serves many purposes in our lives and if one song does a good job at cheering us up and another does a good job at helping us to see inside of ourselves, that's a good thing. To get caught up in how it was made, the musicianship of the person whose name.. Cons: The latter part of his career is underrepresented. It s a testament to James Taylor s soothing voice and quality songwriting that he has maintained such a high level of popularity for almost four decades now. Since strolling onto the scene with an acoustic guitar via The Beatles Apple label in 1969, JT has defined the male singer-songwriter, and in addition to his own success, has served as the musical father to acts ranging from Duncan Sheik to John Mayer, not to mention his own two record-making kids, Ben and Sally. It s hard to explain what Taylor s voice means to me in words. The identification I always seem to come up with when I hear...
