Having inspired a generation of songwriters and plagiarists, it was about time the Other Elvis got his fair tribute. This one's got some interesting twists, though--rather than culling together a bunch of plain old covers, BESPOKE SONGS, LOST DOGS, DETOURS & RENDEZVOUS: SONGS OF ELVIS COSTELLO features some interesting pair-ups--"My Brave Face," penned with Paul McCartney is a sunny, strong pop gem, while "Miss Mary" is a strident, blues-tinged lament co-written with Italian superstar Zucchero. Irish baladeer Christy Moore lends his unique flair to "The Deportees Club" from GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD, turning it into an accordion-laced tearjerker. Among the legendary names dropping in with inspired cover versions are Roy Orbison, whose "The Comedians" (CRUEL WORLD is well-represented here) must number among Costello's proudest moments, Johnny Cash ("Hidden Shame") and Chet Baker, with a sublime take on "Almost Blue."
