  Turned my golf game around
Review created: 06/08/06

For over 40 years I have been struggling with my golf game. Too many muffs, too many inconsistencies, too many terrible shots, but still enough good shots during a round to keep me playing. A friend (and playing partner) suggested that I read Ben Hogan's book. I found it on eBay for a small price, bought it and read it. The first of five fundamental lessons concerned a proper grip. I did not pay much attention because so far as I could tell my grip on the club was pretty much as described by Hogan. Then I reread the chapter and took out a 3 iron and practiced the suggested grip. I noted I would have to move my right hand around to the left to use the grip. The next time I played I tried the new, but uncomfortable grip. I shot 41, drove straight and long down the fairways, but missed a lot of greens because I was hitting all my irons longer than usual. I consistently misclubbed by one club until I figured out what was happening. I was amazed by the improvements in my game. This book will cure a golfer's ills if the other parts of his or her game (the stance, the backswing, the full swing) are otherwise in order.

  Ben Hogan's 5 Fundamentals

Although Mr. Hogan's lessons are no longer "modern", this book is the absolute field manual for basic training of a golfer. From grip to alignment, to stance, to back swing and forward swing, Hogan's words and diagrams reveal the methods still practiced today by our modern pros. This is a must for the avid golfer who is looking to improve his game and for the beginner who wants to start out with the basic fundamentals.

A must own book for every golfer out there

Quite simply the single most valuable book a golfer looking to begin or master the golf swing can read. I have read the book three times and look forward to the fourth. It is a no nonsense instructional guide with detailed drawings and precise text. It reveals to the reader exactly what is necessary to enjoy the game of golf by mastering the necessary fundamentals of the proper golf swing. A must read for any serious golfer.

  Ben Hogan's Five Lessons

Every golfer should read and study this book. It has changed my game (for the better). Stresses fundamentals as most important part of swing. Follow Mr. Hogan's advice and you will improve - for sure!!!! Written in 1957.

I bought this book after golfing with a fellow who started the game three months ago. He said he studied this book only (no other lessons). I thought it would be a long day then he proceded to impressively drive green after green.

Great book for a new golfer

I bought this book because of all the great reviews it had and it did not disappoint. I just started playing golf about three months ago and this book has been a great help. Ben Hogan goes over the fundamentals that will help build a consistent golf swing and covers the small details that most people may forget. If there is one golf book you are going to buy, this one should be it.

After 50 years, this is still the easiest to understand guide to the golf swing. Every golfer should have a copy and read it often.

  A Golf Instruction Classic
Review created: 12/03/09
by:

I bought this book about a month ago and began to read it as soon as I could. The lessons in this book are easy to digest (there are only 5 fundamentals). I bought the book based off a recommendation from my golf instructor, as he said this is the only book that has produced a couple PGA tour winners. There is a bit of excessive discussion in between lessons, the one thing that I didn’t like (but it is easy to skip over due to the bolded key thoughts, another plus). If you’re looking for an easy fix to a golf swing, find another sport to play. As with most things in life it takes time and practice to get better and this is just as true with golf. If you apply and practice the fundamentals taught in this book you will see improvement. I would highly recommend this book to someone who is willing to learn and stick with the “fundamentals” taught in the book and put in the time and practice needed to see results. I would not recommend this for someone looking for a quick fix, there is no such thing.

  Ben Hogan's golf book

Loved this book because it has a real simple approach to the proper way to swing a golf club! I found many other books will teach alot of techniques, and setups for certain shots on the golf course, and for me this was unnecessary because i had never really learned how to setup the proper way for a standard shot. This book helped because it teaches the proper grip, address, the swing, the downswing, and how it should feel during each moment of the swing!

I'm a beginner looking to improve my golf technique. I found this book helpful, but it's worth mentioning that it is extremely technical. I often found articles and videos online that were more useful to me because they were easier to understand.

Ben Hogan's 5 Fundementals of Golb
Review created: 02/04/09
by:

I wished I had read this book 12 years ago when I started to play golf.
A must read!!! Transition from your old swing to this new swing takes about 10 days of practice.
The only aspect I modified was the right hand grip. Ben will tell you to place the right hand V towards the chin. I found that this made me hit high fades with the woods. I changed to the right hand V to run up my right arm. This change made of a more boring shot. And it made for easier working the ball right or left. I have noticed that all Tour Players have the left and right hand V's running along the right arm. But with the higher lofted the V placement made little difference. But everything else the Ben teaches is right on!!!

This book is a wonderful primer for beginners and a great review for experienced duffers. Although Hogan's tips are invaluable, the drawings are remarkable in the accuracy and ability to duplicate while holding a club.
