This is an excellent club for the high index player to graduate to. Those currently using cast cavity back clubs and are looking to work the ball and lower your handicap, make the move to the Hogans. The long proven technology will aid you in your quest. The cost is resonable (get fitted) and the long term reward is immeasurable. Remember always play like your a winner....smile alot even if you missed your putt.

  Superb Forged Iron
Review created: 05/07/07(updated 05/16/07)

I have a golf business and have bought, sold, and played almost everything.

Forged Hogan is the best. They feel SO much softer and sweeter than Callaway (brick on a stick), Ping (straight but short), TaylorMade (nice clubs, but not spectacular), Cleveland (hit them on the sweet spot or suffer), Nike (Pro-forged has so-so feel), McGregor (just a bit too heavy), and even the vaunted Mizuno forged irons (super low launch angle, and not even close to Hogan for feel).

They say the new Hogan FTX is not quite as good, but to me they are identical to the Plus. Guess I am not sensitive enough to feel the difference.

The Apex Plus is a muscle back, rather than a blade, so you do get some foregiveness on mis-hits, but not a lot. The swing weight feels very light, and encourages a higher swing speed. Totally workable for fades, draws, knock-downs, or high soft ones.

Distance is very good, especially considering that they did not "cheat" and use lower lofts to get it (the E, or pitching wedge, is 46 degrees... perfect for a four wedge set of 46-50-54-58.

One drawback; the grips suck. Not that great to start with and they wear fast.

I would never buy a Hogan driver, wedge, or putter, but the irons are truly great. Same goes for the hybrids. Just the sweetest longest most workable clubs you can find.

Pros
Can be bent to your swing.
This is something that I highly recommend, It was $4.00 a club in phoenix.
Classic look and name.
Hogan is a certain style and NAME that will always outlast the lastest and greatest.

Price is right.
I paid $400.00 4 years ago and still love these clubs. They are much cheaper now I see.

Forgiving but also let you work the ball.
I'm a 15 HCP and these make me feel confident over the ball. Top line is just right I hate think top line (AKA Calloway).
I've played Wilson Pro Staff and Clevelands. I've also used demo sets of taylor made and King Cobra (they had there day).

  Hogan Apex +

I am a long time golfer 30+ years and my handicap has ranged from 5 to 15 over those years. Most of the time I have played with a forged blade and on occasion a set of pigns to see what they were all about. But at the end of the day I always seems to go back to a forges blade, and normally a Hogan. I was looking for something that would give me the playability that I needed plus some forgivness when I did not have my 'A' game......which is more often than not now adays. These Hogans give me everything that I need in a club plus I can still use the Apex 4 shaft that I am used to. I can work the ball left or right and still have a margin for error. This is a great set for someone that either is ready to improve their game or needs to scale back a bit from a true blade. Standing over these clubs, they feel just like a normal blade.....but easier to hit at the end of the day.

  Ben Hogan Apex Plus Irons
Review created: 10/22/07

What do you like: I've been playing Mizuno MX-23 for the past three seasons. After hitting an Apex Plus iron at the range, I decided to buy a set. Not dissapointed at all. These irons are buttery soft. And with my swing type, more sweeping, the narrow sole still allows for me to take a divot. Head shape is smaller which allows for more shot shaping and at the same time the shallow cavity back provides some forgiveness.

What I don't like: Club head material is very soft (can't have everything, right?) and dings easily. Definitely use breathable covers or bag clatter dents will result. Graphite shafts are okay but now I wished I opted for the Hogan steel #3.

  BEN HOGAN APEX PLUS IRONS
Review created: 01/08/07

I love the look of these irons. My problem is that at 56 years old I've lost some swing speed. These clubs are great for single digit handicap players. Alas, this was me about five years ago. I still plan to keep them because they're so beautiful. I will play American made forgings any day over Mizunos. The chroming is sooo superior on Ben Hogan and Wilson Staffs, not to mention the classic/timeless looks of these American made clubs.

  Purchasing golf clubs on eBay
Review created: 08/08/06
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I purchased a set of Ben Hogan Apex Plus irons on eBay and have been very happy with the purchase. The auction allowed me to find a set of clubs no longer available as new and at a very reasonalbe price. What I like most about eBay is the vast number of products available, you can find almost anything for sale. What I dislike is the number of scams ever present, lurking behind a false identity in an attempt to gain access to an honest member's account.

As simply as possible. I was looking to buy a set of irons. tremendous The Ben Hogan Apex graphite were available and fortunate enough I won them for what I consider a reasonable $ amount. The vendor shipped and packaged them in a excellent manner. I thank him for taking good care of the clubs and the professionalism in the way he followed through. thank you for a pleasant experience of ebaying.

A good set of used quality irons at a fair price. Ben Hogan Irons are noted for their playablitity and responsivness. They are not the quality of original Hogan products but acceptable. This will be the 5th set of Hogan's I've owned over the last 40+ years.

They are very forgiving, but yet workable. Have great feel. Love these clubs. My clubs are fitted with the apex 3 shafts, and yet they seem very firm. I did not flail shots. I have always used stiff shafts. I would definetly recomend these clubs to any intermediate or better golfer.

Ben Hogan, the most honest clubs
Review created: 12/28/09
by:

I got Ben Hogan Apex Plus irons with regular steel sfafts off ebay. I purchased the clubs to test the Ben Hogan forged irons which still are claimed as the best forged irons. I have not used any forged irons with steel shafts, and I decided to give a try.
At first practice, I was really frustrated. Seven or eight out of ten swings, the balls were shanked to the right. Only one or two were cleanly hit, and the feedback from mishits were obvious. Clean hits, however, were nonetheless gave me the real feel of the hits.
I went to the range everyday for a week overcoming the frustration step by step. I found what were wrong with my swing one by one; to rapid moving of the weight, too quick down swings, pulling the clubs at finishing, etc.
After a week's practice, the direction of the balls came back to my expectation, and my swing has been improved a lot.
My Hogans are probably from 1999, but I would say the clubs are very honest giving the best feel of hit at the same time punishing the bad swings. No other clubs in my possession with improvement for easy hits may give me the real feel of hitting the balls.

  Ben Hogan Apex Plus
Review created: 11/04/09

While a little dated, the Apex Plus is a solid forged club with a player friendly design. You can pay a lot more and not get near the value in a used iron. Looks good, has the forged feel and has the quality associated with the Hogan brand.

  Great player's irons!
Review created: 06/13/09

These irons are forged from soft carbon steel just like all the other big name player's clubs. They have clean lines and all the features that better players are looking for in their irons. They are extremely workable and have great feel. Overall, these are some of the best irons I have ever used, and I've tried about all of them! Get some, if you're lucky enough to find a set!

Hogan Apex Plus,1999-2001, Apex 4 shafts
Review created: 05/06/09
by:

Hogan Apex Plus irons, Apex 4 stiff shafts, std loft & lie. Bought used on Ebay, Nice condition, good price. These clubs are GREAT for me and much better than I was hoping for after only 3 18 hole rounds in 1 week. I'm actually more enthuastic about playing golf this year than I have been in 15 years. The forged traditional looking iron really appeals to me. I liked playing Wilson clubs in '70's & 80's. I started playing golf when I was 9 in mid-sixties. Just standing over the ball with these Hogan irons in hand is visually great which gives me confidence and we all know how important that is! I played Ping G2 irons, True Temper Stiff 'Cushin" steel shafts, last couple of years and my scores were not improving with the 'game improvment irons'. I got the Pings because I turned 50 and thought I should get some easier to hit irons. Ya they were easier to hit but that didn't help my game. Not sure how I got interested in Hogans but everything I researched was good or great. Thought about Apex blades, but decided to go with Apex Plus after reading alot online. The forged irons feel "like butter", as so many reviews say, when you catch it right and mishits aren't that bad, but you know when and 'how' you missed it. Plus these Hogans are going farther than the G2 Pings, Maybe I'm just swinging better, maybe the Hogans make me want to swing better, whatever, I'm going to have to club down because I'm airmailing greens with 5 iron from 165 yds. which is like 20 years ago for me. Like the set up of E wedge too,. since I'm going over greens and having to chip back to the hole, the E wedge has been getting me close enough to save par about half the time.

  think before you leap.....
Review created: 02/06/09

I shouldnt have bought this set. Not all information there--like the set was for women and was shorter than a normal set by one half inch. the seller really did not know golf clubs and the nuances of condition and these should have been priced lower. I will now have to reshaft the set to make them playable. I wish the comments were more clear. the set was sent in two boxes and in a box too short. thus the time to get the set was longer and the packaging was un professional. I know Im being harsh by simply telling the truth. The truth in this case hurts---me and my wallet. All in all this purchase was a big mistake.

This is a great club made better. I had the stock shafts removed and had Project X shafts installed. The lies throught out the set required adjusted. They were everywhere and my shot pattern reflected it. Now that the clubs are a custom fit "Outstanding" comes to mind.
