Synopsis Trend-spotter Sandra Foster works for the Hi Tek company trying to create a theory about the nature of trends. Too bad the inept, and stunningly disorganized, interdepartmental assistant Flip is stymieing her progress. But Flip does introduce Sandra to biologist Bennett O'Reilly, whose work with chaos theories complements hers. When Sandra and Bennett decide to set up a joint project to test their ideas on the behavior of a flock of sheep, they realize that Flip, bumbling around, acting oddly, and sporting weird clothes, unknowingly acts as their office's bellwether sheep.

Industry Reviews "Willis has written a story that is witty, thought-provoking, and a little too close to the bone to be considered a fantasy. Readers will chuckle knowingly over the picture of trendiness gone mad. At the same time they will find themselves learning quite a bit about chaos theory and scurrying to the encyclopedias to research the scientists whose discoverers are scattered throughout the text." Voya - Kathleen Beck (08/19/1996)
"Quiet, thoughtful, and humorous." New York Review of Science Fiction - Arthur B. Cover (05/19/1997)
The clever pen of Connie Willis is put to scathingly funny effect in `Bellwether', a new short novel published in trade format. In a future society that seems all too like today, a researcher trying to determine the cause of fads runs into a brick wall until she joins forces with a chaos theorist trying to get funding for his own project. The answer lies right under their noses, but will the scientific method bring it to light? Wickedly skewering everything in sight, Ms. Willis gives us many an amusing moment as she makes us wonder if there just might be something to her theory after all. Adams
