Synopsis
Based on author Martha Grimes's own childhood memories, BELLE RUIN is the third in a series starring 12-year-old Emma Graham, waitress at her mother's rundown hotel and part-time investigative reporter/amateur sleuth. This time, Emma devotes herself to probing the mystery surrounding the destruction of Belle Rouen, an upscale hotel that burned down 20 years ago, just after the infant of a couple staying there was kidnapped.

Industry Reviews
"Grimes saves her loveliest writing for the gloomy images of empty train stations and tumbledown houses in which Emma takes such melancholy pleasure. But there's also an explosive comic exuberance to the scenes of Emma's high jinks around town and at her mother's hotel....[I've] fallen under the spell of Grimes's beguiling young sleuth."

      GRIMES STRIKES GOLD AGAIN

This is the third novel in a new series by Martha Grimes, best known for her Richard Jury detective series novels. Fans of the series should enjoy Grimes's stories of 12 year old Emma, who waitresses at her mother's hotel when she's not out solving previously unsolved mysteries. Grimes' characters and background are as usual, vivid, humourous, colorful, and completely absorbing. I suggest reading the two novels written prior to this installment (although it's by no means necessary; new fans should enjoy this regardless) which include Hotel Paradise and Cold Flat Junction. These are worthy of a spot in any library to be enjoyed over and over. I hope more will be forthcoming in the series, even if it means waiting for a new Richard Jury novel a big longer.
