Album Notes This set received the 1998 Grammy Award for "Best Chamber Music Performance." It was also nominated for the Award for "Best Classical Album." Beethoven's string quartets sit atop the world of classical music. While he adopted the symphony as a platform for public statements, Beethoven's more elusive schemes went into the quartets, especially the five he wrote in his last years, which are marvels of unparalleled concentration. The cycle of 15 presents enough interpretive and technical challenges to keep performers and listeners occupied for a lifetime. The Emerson String Quartet is one of the world's elite groups, their virtues well known: power, rhythmic command and razor sharp ensemble. They are well attuned to the music's volatility, its abrupt changes of mood and often brash nature, and are particularly exciting in the fast movements. They do not go for excessive warmth of tone nor do they seek to find mysteries beyond what is written on the page, but what is there is illuminated forcefully, so that even in the heat of the "Grosse Fuge" lines are clearly maintained. This set represents a considerable achievement.
