Album Notes
This seven-track EP by the poised-for-greatness British rock quartet the Libertines is appropriately titled. In the wake of their exciting, ragged debut, UP THE BRACKET, the Libertines were hailed as one of the best new bands in Britain, but internal disputes and the publicized drug problems and disruptive antics of singer/guitarist Pete Doherty put the group's future in jeopardy. The Libertines held it together off and on through 2004, completing their self-titled follow-up and performing a series of dates at London's Brixton Academy.
Four tracks from the Brixton concerts make up the bulk of WHAT BECAME OF THE LIKELY LADS. The live cuts showcase the group's edgy, shambolic appeal, and flair for melodic hooks (as well as highlighting their similarities to the Clash). The EP's other tracks include the incessantly catchy pop-punk tune "Don't Look Back Into the Sun" and two versions of the title track, a bouncy jaunt flavored with grungy 1960s Britpop. The Libertines--minus Doherty--went on tour in 2004 and 2005, while Doherty performed with his new project Babyshambles, forcing Libertines fans to ask the question: What became of the likely lads?
