The Beach (DVD, 2000)

For his first major project after the overwhelming success of Titanic, Leonardo Di Caprio took a risky path in this adaptation of Alex Garland's acclaimed novel, directed by Danny Boyle. Richard (Di Caprio) is an American backpacking through Asia with a handful of friends from Europe. While in Bangkok, he meets a mad Scotsman who calls himself Daffy Duck (Robert Carlyle). Shortly before Mr. Duck kills himself, he gives Richard a crude map to a place in Thailand that he claims is paradise on earth: beautiful, unspoiled, and uninhabited. For lack of anything better to do, Richard and his companions try to locate the spot, which, after a dangerous and taxing journey, takes them to a beach as beautiful as Duck said it would be. Richard and his friends settle in, but before long they discover that they are not alone; a large group of fellow travelers has already dug themselves in, and they have established a community with the same social evils that Richard was hoping to leave behind. Just as important, there is an army of natives who grow marijuana in the nearby hills and do not appreciate the presence of these visitors. The Beach proved controversial during production, partly due to production delays and shifting release dates, partly due to environmental concerns after crew members bulldozed parts of the Thai island of Phi Phi Le for the planting of non-native trees. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

The movie came in a very timely manner and is in great condition just as it was described. I was pleased with this transaction and would certainly buy from this seller again.

This is an absolute incredible movie. If you like traveling and adventure then this is for you. This movie actually inspired me to travel to Thailand and was the best time I have ever had. I cant wait to go back on my permenat vaction there. I will be retiring there for sure! This is a must see. My question is why theres no The Beach 2!

i bought it for a christmas gift for my older sister. she loved it, because she couldn't find the movie anywhere. and it was an awesome price, so i liked it! no complaints!!

I thought it was a pretty good movie with a good plot. I liked the ideal being a small island like that.

Leo Was amazing in this breathtaking comedic-drama about a dozen or so people living on a secret island! Makes you think twice about the "real world".

very good film for younger viewers (teenagers in high school.) film style reminded me of pop teen comedies (althought this film isn't a comedy.) READ THE BOOK

One of Leonardo Decaprio's better movies. A well written adventure. I give it 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

This movie makes me feel like all the worries in the world have melted away. Great movie to watch over and over.

I remember watching this a long time ago when I was in highschool. I still like it to this day. I bet something like this actually happened to someone in Thailand.

This movie takes you to another place. Scenery is beautiful. I'm not a huge fan of di Caprio but he actually pulled it off. Takes some unexpected turns. I highly recommend.

An incredibly unique storyline about an American visiting another country. Once there, he runs into a man with a treasure map. Bored, the American (Leo) decides to give it a try. What he stumbles on makes for a fantastic story! Twists and turns make this a great movie. Adult language, drama and scenes. I highly recommend!

Like an idoit I went ahead and sent a check for a dvd because the seller did not have paypal. After the check was cashed the seller was banned from ebay and now I am out $5.00 and a DVD. The seller does not want to help and either does Ebay. I've only made 21 purchases and am glad I only got burned for 5$ to figure out how easy it is to get ripped off on ebay. Buyer beware.

This movie is a great beach fantasy. I absolutely love the visual aspects of the film as well as its soundtrack. It never gets old to me. Everytime i watch or listen to the music, something new pops out. Its a really great movie for beach lovers and anyone who likes digging deap into the visual mood of movies.

The beauty of the actual island that this movie takes place on is absolutely amazing! The story is great and I could see myself setting out on an adventure with strangers just as Leonardo Di Caprio's character did. It's definitely worth a look if you like exotic locales.

This film is brilliant. One of the movies that sets Leonardo Decaprio as one truly amazing actor illustrating that he can act not only traditional roles such as the romantic, but also that he has a sense for adopting a freakish character. The movie educates us on the price of utopia, and thus can it really exist? It’s wickedly optimistic, and gives an elegant glimpse into the international drug scene. The movie is a sociological lesson to what is true human nature.

THEY DISCOVER THAT THE ISLAND IS IN FACT TRUE, BUT IT IS A HUGE SECRET AND NO-ONE ELSE MUST KNOW ABOUT THE ISLAND, OTHERWISE IT COULD BECOME A TOURIST ATTRACTION QUICKLY. THINGS GO DOWNHILL WHEN OTHER PEOPLE START TO DISCOVER THE ISLAND (RICHARD'S FAULT) AND HE IS THEREFORE DISOWNED BY SOME OF HIS FRIENDS OF THE ISLAND. I WON'T SAY ANY MORE, YOU JUST HAVE TO SEE FOR YOURSELF. THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE TO WATCH WHEN YOU JUST FEEL LIKE ESCAPING TO A DISTANT ISLAND FAR AWAY.
