Battlestar Galactica for Windows

Looking for something to sooth myself from the recent departure of SciFi's *awesome* retelling of Battlestar Galactica... I turned to this video game - one of the very few out there that actually depicts the newer SciFi show (most of all BSG games still feature the original 1978 theme/ships/etc.). For eye-appeal, the game is great. You get to see/fly the ships from the newer series, pretty much anything from a Viper Mark II on up for the Colonial Side, and everything from a standard Cylon Raider up through the Heavy Raiders (and then some). The game play limits you to a 2-D field of battle, that is pretty much bordered, so you can't fly out of the general area (a detraction I thought for a space game... I don't recall the show having battles inside a boxed in area). While there are a lot of controls to initiate evasive rolls, etc. (not just your basic X-Y maneuvers), you can't help but feel lifeless at the controls. Depending on how you set up your camera view, it's almost a 1st-person space ship shooter, to a 3rd-person viewpoint. But, no matter what you do, the game-play is very generic. Too little back-story and not nearly enough action. The game feels very generic, sans the cool BSG graphics. You can get in and just start fighting... you can play the mission(s) (to read the mini-series basically), or you can go multi-player. I didn't spend much time with the multi-player (maybe that aspect would be more fun), but again, the game really doesn't draw you in that well (I don't have a problem turning this one off when anything else pops up... unlike other games that are much more engaging). The up side is, this game is commonly VERY cheap to acquire now. Don't spend more than $10 on it. It's worth about that (or less... if you can score yourself a copy for $1-$3, you'll be happy with your purchase). In the end, this really didn’t fulfill my need for a BSG replacement (I’m still looking!). I hope they make a much better (newer) BSG game sometime soon!
