Holy cost-cutting studio execs Batman!

First of all, this isn't even the first Batman movie. There is a 1943 version that is pretty bad, even by serial standards. You would think that since Batman had exploded in popularity by 1940 they would have given him a decent movie, but you would be wrong. This 1949 serial is much better than its predecessor. Sadly, there is no Batmobile. We have a convertible, top down for Bruce Wayne, top up for Batman. On the upside, this serial is pretty dark (even though nearly everything happens in the daytime) and shows Batman as a serious minded detective out to solve a crime. This film is, thank God, nothing like the 1966 TV show. It is in fact a near perfect mirror of the Batman comics of the 1940's, so if you like them, you'll love this movie. Batman's mask looks terrible here, but other than that the overall product is enjoyable. Recomended for die-hard Batman fans and anyone who appreciates a good serial movie. Hint: stock up on popcorn, this one runs over 260 minutes.
