  Holy cost-cutting studio execs Batman!

First of all, this isn't even the first Batman movie. There is a 1943 version that is pretty bad, even by serial standards. You would think that since Batman had exploded in popularity by 1940 they would have given him a decent movie, but you would be wrong. This 1949 serial is much better than its predecessor. Sadly, there is no Batmobile. We have a convertible, top down for Bruce Wayne, top up for Batman. On the upside, this serial is pretty dark (even though nearly everything happens in the daytime) and shows Batman as a serious minded detective out to solve a crime. This film is, thank God, nothing like the 1966 TV show. It is in fact a near perfect mirror of the Batman comics of the 1940's, so if you like them, you'll love this movie. Batman's mask looks terrible here, but other than that the overall product is enjoyable. Recomended for die-hard Batman fans and anyone who appreciates a good serial movie. Hint: stock up on popcorn, this one runs over 260 minutes.

Batman and Robin - The 1949 Serial Collection. (2005)

I like the way the show was done for it's time. It held up to the comic book versions of the older Batman and not the 60's version. It had a lot more of the characters that the new movies are trying to portray. I bought it because I couldn't find it in the stores.

  BAM, POW, WOW!

this is one fun serial to watch. now you have to remember this was back in the forties, so the technology was not there. instead you have a man and a "boy" fighting crime dressed up in costumes and getting knocked over the head and puched around on a daily basis.i love the idea that they travel around in a common car. good idea since the batmobile is a dead give away when trail the bad guys. no gimmicks, just fists and bodies flying around and nobody gets a black eye and the bad guys don't use their guns on our dynamic duo. robert lowery does his best tyrone power, don diego impression, when addressing miss vickie vale. at times i don't get the titles of the episodes, but that's small compared to the excitement of each episode. i would suggest any batman fan to pick up this and the other batman serial and let loose and go down stream and enjoy the true film beginnings of batman. the transfer to dvd is great! to the batpoles robin!!!!!!

Awesome stories and acting make this serial the best of the era.
Excelent writing compounded with talented actors give the dark knight the edge needed to make the character believable to all ages.
