Best Batman of the first 4

This was the best Batman film of the original 4. Michael Keetan was a great original Batman, and Jack Nicholsan was perfectly cast as the Joker. This film captured what Batman is supposed to be, and became an instant hit without being cartoony.

Final Verdict:

5/5

Rent or Buy?: This is the only Batman film of the first 4 that I would call a must buy. Great movie that doesn't lose its magic.

The Batman 1989 Movie Restarted the resurgence in collecting Batman comics. Just having the Batman's fans talking about the casting of Michael Keaton as the Batman gave life to interest in the then upcoming movie! Prior to the Batman movie, Keaton was more known for his comedic roles and just didn't seem to be the right choice for the square jawed Batman among most Batman fans.

Additionally the fans were wondering if the movie would be as 'campy'as the earlier 1960's TV Show starring Adam West as Batman, or would it have the tone and themes of Alan Moore's BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE and Frank Miller's BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS...??

A rushed teaser trailer was quickly released to prove to the fans that the upcoming film would be more faithful to the original comic books, which had the darker Batman before the Comics Code Authority changed the tone of the comic books in the mid 1950's.

Despite the earlier worries, the film became the most successful of 1989 and received praise from many Batman readers. Additionally, Keaton changed many fans' minds about his casting to become hailed as one of the best actors to play the title role, especially with some of the later choices!!

Movie Critics' reaction to the film was largely mixed, with some praising the film for its set design and production value, while others panned it as being too much of an intellectual exercise for Tim Burton and too little of a Batman movie.

Roger Eber, who I recently found out is a true comic book fan, gave the film two stars, out of four, remarking, "'Batman' is a triumph of design over story, style over substance - a great-looking movie with a plot you can't care much about."

Batman opened in over 2,000 theaters in North America. In its opening weekend, it grossed $40,489,746, which, at the time of its release, was a new record.

The film ended its theatrical first run with $251,188,924, and was not only the biggest moneymaker of 1989, but was also the fifth highest-grossing film of all time. The film's total worldwide box office gross was $411,348,924. It is, to date, the most financially successful Batman movie of the franchise.

I did like this movie when it first came out, but cannot watch it on a repeated basis as the violence is just too over the top for me.

It still is a must for a Batman collection tho!

Michael

Bad video quality. Cheap cardboard case. Buy the special edition if you can, it worth the money. The bonus is you get special features with the special edition.

I bought this for my 4 and 5 year old children. They loved this movie. They liked the fantasy of the world and the characters along with the story line. They were jumping around really getting into the action scenes. It's an oldie, but a goodie for the little ones.

I know this is the original DVD release of this film.

I was truly disappointed with no extras on it, deleted scenes, behind the scenes, interviews, that type of thing.

Good film, if you remove Basinger & THAT SCREAMING!!!!!!!!

if you write reviews on ebay based on a transaction you made, than there must be a part of you brain missing.
the batman movies just seem to get worse after this movie. batman begins was the first time we saw the franchise get better than the last, but then again, batman begins was kinda its own franchise. there was a couple different batman comic books and cartoons going around and batman begins was based off a specific series as opposed to being based on batman in general. personally i think what tim burton did with this film is, he made something somewhat original despite what the comics read. it turned out to be one of the best superhero movies of all time. batman was played very well considering he was being played by michael keaton who was a former comedian. jack nicholson played the joker in the perfect way; his own way. everything in this movie just happened perfectly.
then tim burton directed the sequal. tim burton likes making wierd, creepy, odd movies and the movie took a even more dark turn. so when the studio said lets make a new one they hired joel schumacher. someone forgot to tell them joel was only capable of making one truly good film in his lifetime and he made it already! so the third one went down the same path being a little worse than the last. and in the search for more money they made another. hired joel again. they assumed since the last one made money, that it must have made it because joel was the director. as it turned out it only made money because batman was in the title, and this time around fans learned to wait til the movie was out at rental stores. so the movie got bad reviews and didnt make much money.
in an attempt to bring it back they got a new director for batman begins. it ruined the slide of every batman movie getting worse as time went on. i personally dont think it was as good as the first batman. the first batman captures tim burtons vision but without all the madness he applies to all his other wierd*ss films. i still dont know what i saw when i watched edward scissorhands. my mind blocked it all out so i wouldnt go mad. how does a human being come up with this stuff??!!
anyway a great movie. love him or hate him, tim burton is always more of an artist than a film maker. so when someone writes a script without tim burton in mind, like batman and they put tim's artistry in the directors chair good things can happen. buy this movie. bid on this movie. get this movie!

  Tim Burton's Batman movie

I bought this DVD because I like Batman. It portrayes the Joker and Batman perfectly. It has a good storyline and great acting. The overall film/sound quality wasn't too good, probably because the movie is 18 years old. I didn't like seeing Bruce Wayne wearing glasses, as his crime-fighting alter-ego has excellent eyesight.

The movie is still very good after all these years

This movie was so great when it first came out and is still enjoyable after all these years. Keaton was still miscast as Batman. I think it would have been nice if they would have cast a relative unknown like they did in the Batman Begins movie. Nicholson was an excellent Joker. The car almost steals the show.

Thank god they made this movie

SPOILER ALERT:
As I've said "thank god they made this movie",because before it, everyone (outside of comics) when they thought Batman, they thought of the Adam West dork knight from the 60's.It was revolutionary and was good enough for its time.Unlike Batman Begins the movie adheres little to the Batman mythos.Several glaring alterations were made such as knowing the identiy of the Joker, the Joker killing Bruce's parents, and the fact Alfred would invite someone into the Batcave. The only thing Keaton has over Bale is the way he talks while being Batman.Other than that he's just a guy in a costume.Jack Nicholson is good as the Joker, and at times he seems to be the lead character.Batman gets absolutely no origin story, except for his parents death, but not how he came to be.Obviously this allowed for "Begins".Instead,Joker's entire story is revealed to us. The atmosphere of Gotham is adequate. The Batmobile is cooler than the one in "Begins" but it's all style, not rationality.Which can be said about the whole movie. It's style but not all that much substance.Although it defintely brought the true Batman back in style.

  Great movie everyone should see

I bought it because even though everyone had already seen it years ago, I STILL hadn't and wanted to get up to speed with my pop culture finally. It was a great movie. A lot of things make sense now like things I remember hearing people say, and I'm glad I watched it. Everyone should own this movie because it's a classic.

If you're a guy, it will make you want to be like Batman, and if you're a girl you'll want to be rescued by someone like him. Simple and sweet, and a movie worth watching.

The first of the modern Batman remakes and I think the best. Keaton makes a better Batman than Clooney or Kilmer. Great if you are a Batman fan.

  Classic!
Review created: 06/23/09
by:

After this film was made, it shaped how every other bat-movie and bat-comic would look. The current generation has The Dark Knight, while the slightly older generation has Tim Burton's BATMAN.

Michael Keaton's casting was an odd choice, but he proves everyone's doubts wrong from the first to last scene. And we cannot forget about the top notch performance by Jack Nicholson as the Joker, totally untouchable. Other great performances include the late Pat Hingle and Jack Palance.

The cinematography is grade-A. The soundtrack, which is a blend of classical scores and hits written by Prince, completely compliments the film and the actors.

Do yourself a favor and BUY this movie. You'll watch it again and again.

The classic Batman, definitely. Nicholson or Ledger as the Joker is debatable but this is definitely a great movie. Sometimes a bit too slow and a bit too dark but worth the time.

  Tim, Michael And Of Course....JACK!!
Review created: 09/19/08

Tim Burton directed Michael Keaton brilliantly and just let Jack be Jack. Nicholson was phenomenal as the joker. While 2008's Dark Knight boasts a fantastic performance from the late Heath Ledger, Jack set the tone for how The Joker should be portrayed.

Michael Keaton as the dark, brooding, disturbed Bruce Wayne was simply brilliant.

Love the movie. Have young son who enjoys Batman-and I wanted him to watch from start to finish all of the Batman movies. He has enjoyed all of the ones we have seen so far. We will be purchasing the one with "Penguin" to watch next. He likes Robin-The Joker and Mr. Freeze the best. It is nice to share these movies with him as I enjoyed the very much myself as a youngster. These movies are the "Classics" to me.

  Batman!!! Awesome
Review created: 03/04/08

I love this movie. Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton bring the comic books to life. The dark and sinister nature of the film is very true to DC's Batman. This was really the era before batman got all neon lighted up and really bubble gum. Micheal Keaton was a great Batman and this movie is suitable for those that love comics or don't.
