Bette Midler's got all the bases covered on this exuberant album, from swelling, big-voiced ballads ("That's How Love Moves") to quieter, soulful songs ("Song of Bernadette," "Lullaby in Blue"), the loud, hip-hop bitchfest "I'm Beautiful" and the peculiar and campy ("Ukulele Lady," "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show'"). For the uninitiated, BATHHOUSE BETTY is likely to be mystifying but oddly irresistible, while Midler's longtime fans will find this album to be a comeback of sorts, a return to the uninhibited energy of her 1972 debut in a way that none of her interim releases have even hinted at. We've known for some time that Midler has a big, ferocious voice which can go all soft and sweet or soar to meet the heights of "Wind Beneath My Wings," but what we might have forgotten (and she reminds us) is what being a diva is all about.

There are some wonderful songs on here, but I like Bette Midler anyway. There were just a couple I didn't like as much, but all in all, I would recommend this one as a good one to anyone.

I was searching for Bette's CD with "I'm Beautiful" included as a Christmas present for my daughter. We popped it in the player Christmas morning & to my surprise the WHOLE CD is great! There's a great mix of all her styles right here on one CD. I recommend it to any Bette fan.

      Terrific Mix
    Review created: 08/07/06

Bathhouse Betty is a terrific mix of Bette Midler talent. It's got everything from mellow to brass to thought-provoking. The CD was originally given to me by a friend because of the song "I'm Beautiful - Dammit!". But when the CD became unplayable for one reason or another, I had to have another copy because I had grown to love "Lullaby in Blue". Buy it. If you like Bette Midler, you won't be disappointed.

    Pros:
Fun, touching and funny in various places

    Cons:
    The track order is wacky

I bought this CD based on one song. There s a radio program round these parts called Songs of Your Life. On it, if you ve given a certain amount in the pledge drive, you get to do a one-hour show of you favorite songs. One night as I was driving home from work the subject of this program played the song "I m Beautiful." Now I ve heard about 40 songs that I thought at the time "I should get that" and never did. Three days after I heard it I was still singing it in my head and grinning like a fool, so I bought the thing. And I was totally not let down by the rest of the CD. The order of the...

    Pros:
Great songs , Divine Miss M

    Cons:
Not really her bathhouse days worthy, lets down true fans of bathhouse

There has always been something about Bette Midler that made me like her. Perhaps it's because she doesn't give a damn. Don't like the way she looks, sings or acts? Well too bad sounds like it's your problem NOT her's. That is the attitude she takes and I love it ! Empowerment is a great thing. I am all for music that puts us in a better place than we were when we first bought it. This CD is a tribute by her to bathhouse days , hence the title. Don't go into this album expecting the world and you won't be let down. Listen to this album expecting fun and sassy. Just enjoy the music don't put...

One Monkey Did Stop This Show

    Pros:
    The Concept

    Cons:
    The Album

Bette's attempt to please everyone comes off as flat, uninspired and an insult to anyone that has followed her career from the true "bathhouse" days through her renewed success in the late 80's. What she has done here is taken her audience for granted

      BETTE a worthy BATHHOUSE treat

    Pros:
Miss M in all her divinity

    Cons:
a few swear words to endure on the way to heaven

If you like The Divine Miss M, this is another great album for you. If you haven't gotten it up until now, you could do a whole lot worse than this as an introduction. This is Bette as God intended her. There's plenty of good schmaltz ("Song of Bernadette", the theme from the movie One True Thing), plenty of double entendre ("One Monkey Don't Stop No Show"), and a lot of just plain great Bette. The highlights include "Ukelele Lady," which sounds as though it was tailor-made for Bette (though it recently turned up in the soundtrack for the movie The Cider House Rules), and the one song that...
