This is the greatest documentary ever made. Burns starts at the begining and takes the viewer up to baseballs heyday in the 1950's leaving no stone unturned. This doc is loaded with former players and celebrities all tlaking about the history of the game and what makes it great.

Baseball: A Film by Ken Burns
Review created: 12/06/07

If you are a baseball fan and have an extra hundred bucks, buy this DVD set! Taking the history of the National Pastime from the 1800s and its early beginnings to the 1990s, Burns presents an outstanding perspective of baseball. Broken into nine "innings", each disc contains about two hours of historical pictures, commentary and period music. The depth of information and the passion of the presentation will alternatively make you cheer and then cry. Interviews with sports writers and broadcasters give an insider view, as well. Former players are also effectively used to underscore pertinent points, such as Buck O'Neil on race and Curt Flood on free agency. Because this documentary was put together in the early 90s, a special treat can be found in the seventh and eighth innings--interviews with the Mick, perhaps one of the greatest players in baseball history. For the sheer volume of baseball history, as well as a means to pass baseball lore on to the next generation, this set deserves a place in your video library.

Baseball: A Film by Ken Burns - Nine Inning Box Set DVD

Whether you are a baseball fanatic or just appreciate history, this film is incredible. It can be watched over and over again giving the viewer new insights to the greatest game ever invented. The old adage "better than fiction" applies to this film. Some of the stories revolving around this great game are almosts too hard to believe, but undoubtedly it's a game that simply is a microcosm of life. I highly receommend this film and will value the one I own indefinitely.

How can a true baseball fan live without this????
Review created: 12/14/06

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! If you like/love baseball history, you will be amazed at the information gathered in the DVD set. I am into vinatge baseball cards and use this collection for reference from time to time just to get a look back at the player or the history behind certain players, such as the 1919 Black Sox scandal, which is covered very well in this set. It (the set) has also influenced me to buy cards of certain players with a story behind their names. BUY THIS DVD COLLECTION!!!!!!!!! YOU WILL BE PLEASED!!!!

Best History of baseball, and America!
Review created: 12/07/06

I had seen this series on PBS originally, and even videotaped some. I just wanted the whole series, in digital quality. It is such a pleasure to see it again this way! Already, a number of the principals have died (the narrator, several of the commentators, and the beloved Buck O'Neil)and it is sweet to have them again here. This is a great set, so much akin to a baseball game itself, and so much to learn and enjoy. I recommend it to see again and again!

This was one of the best purchases i have ever made on ebay. I am such a baseball fan, and i saw this series when it was on tv in the early 90's. When i watched it again on dvd, it reminded me about why i love baseball so much. The history, the players, just the game itself as a whole. Its a great teaching tool for anyone who wants to know the true history about baseball. I highly reccomend this dvd set for any baseball fan!

This is without question the best documentary on baseball ever made up to this point in time. Any true baseball fan should watch this. I's chocked full of great early footage of the game, as well as interesting and fun information about every player, series, great team, bad team, etc. Even at 10 discs, it is well worth your time to check this one out!

The History of Baseball - a Film by Ken Burns
Review created: 07/05/06
by:

Mr. Burns delves deep inside the very essences of what Baseball is and delivers us a personal yet universal feel for the history of the game. You are drawn into the characters such as Buck of the Negro League which let you see Baseball through the eyes of players that were not allowed to play in the Big Leagues. But it goes so much deeper than that, you get to know the icons of the game not just as they appeared on the field but their personal lives which made them who they were. This is a set of documentaries unlike any I have ever seen before and appeals to not only baseball lovers but any one who appreciates good cinema. I toughly enjoyed the original airing of the series and that is why I had to have the DVD set. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Baseball: A Film by Ken Burns - Nine Inning Boxed set

This was purchased for my boyfriend's birthday. His mother had passed away a few months ago, and the both of them watched the videos of this film till the tape wore out. (She was incapacitated by stroke, and he cared for her for eight years, they were very close.) He'd mentioned several times that he wanted to get this set on DVD, and so on his birthday, I found this set and bought it for him.
I knew that he would be thrilled to receive this set, but I was unprepared for his reaction upon opening his gift. He began crying, and explained to me how much this film meant to him and to his mother. He started watching them right away, and had gone through the entire 23 hours of film in a little over a week.
I have watched a bit of these with him, and I find Ken Burn's work to be very thorough and completely entertaining. I am no sports fan, but I found the history of "America's game" very interesting, and the quality of these DVD's is very good. Interviews, pictures, even the music, all was intriguing and evocative. My boyfriend tells me again and again how this was the very best birthday gift he'd ever received.
