Having made its debut in Cologne in 1926, Bartok's "The Miraculous Mandarin" has survived a turbulent history to be hailed as one of the greatest pieces in the inimitable composer's canon. Here, Martin Alsop directs the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Chorus as they progress through Bartok's work. Sadly, the composer never got to see "The Miraculous Mandarin" performed beyond its initial premier, as it was banned due to its violent nature. But Alsop's rendition would doubtless delight the acclaimed composer, and it is presented here in the stunning DVD-Audio format.
