Barbra Streisand - One Voice (VHS, 1990)

This is my favorite of all of Streisand recordings because she comes completely out (in her music selections and style of performing them), after 20 years in her first full-length concert, as the extremely sensuous, politically intense, and sensitive woman that she always has been so musically understated about. At $2,500 a benefit ticket to her 1986 Malibu home, it was a full audience.

The video intro starts out with comedian Robin Williams pretending to be a scam artist selling invitation only tickets to the private show that will benefit the star's Nuclear, Green, and starvation political concerns. She is surrounded by the luscious greenery of her estate, outdoors, in all white, slim, long dressed & haired, absolutely at her pique in every way.

Her songs are focused to highlight her politics for the Earth, Humanitarian causes, and deep Political concerns for the future. She makes history by braving a truely exceptional rendition of Judy Garland's ***. In my mind, turning it into a blues song, she surpasses Garland's innocent childhood rendition.

Concluding with what could be understood as an understated cynical rendition of "American, the Beautiful," Streisand lands an emotional blow about why she's singing the blues in her "one voice" about well stated social issues for the future of the World's people and for the beauty of the Earth. It was near the end of our suffering through the Reagan adminstration, rather like it is now, nearing the end of our suffering through the W Bush adminstration. When then and like now many of us were singing the politically hard hit at home blues.
