A Wonderful War Film

My military service began at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in 1955. We were trained by a contingent of the 101st Airborne Division and given regimental crests to wear on our uniform... crests that had 6 parachutes, a green hill and the words, 'Curr Ahee' on them. I didn't think much of it until I recently saw on TV the movie series, 'Band of Brothers'. During one of the interviews of 'Band' survivors, the words 'Curr Ahee' were mentioned in connection with the 'Bands' unit , the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of World War II. Their initial training location in 1942 had been at Toccoa, Georgia where the little mountain named Curr Ahee by Cherokee Indians, cast a shadow over their camp. It floored me, for that was my unit in basic training... I hadn't known their history. I dug my 'Curr Ahee' regimental crests out of the bedroom drawer where they had lain for decades, in order to confirm the connection... and I watched the movie with greater reverence, with pride and with awe. I now have a copy of 'The Band of Brothers' and watch it every so often to remind myself of the dedication and sacrifice that freedom requires. It is in my opinion, along with 'Saving Private Ryan', one of the best war movies ever made... realistic and deep, a monument to the men of the 'Band' and to hundreds of thousands like them.
