Ballet Shoes (DVD, 2008)

My family really enjoyed this movie.We could watch this and not have to worry about swearing, sex or violence.It is a family who struggles to make ends meet and how they all come together to help. AAAAAAA++++++

A charming movie for the whole family. Nice performances, good production value, entertaining characters and a fun plot. Girls in particular will love it. Emma Watson, of Harry Potter fame, has never been so lovely. I can happily recommend this movie.

This made-for-TV movie featuring Emma Watson of Harry Potter (Hermione) fame, tells the story of three orphans, Pauline (Watson), Petrova and Posy, adopted by GUM ("Great Uncle Matthew") during several of his many worldwide explorations. Matthew (also played by a Harry Potter alum -- Think Uncle Vernon) has little time to raise his little "fossils" and passes them off to an earlier adoptee, his great nice Sylvia. With the help of her childhood Nana, Sylvia manages to cobble together a life for the 3 fossil sisters during Gum's 12-year absence. Each of the girls demonstrates a unique talent; Pauline for acting, Petrova for mechanical things, and Posy for ballet. Each finds herself through an artistic private school; Petrova more through working on the classic car of a border in the girls' home.

While the plot is somewhat predictable and the story lines relatively pat, the girls are charming and the subcharacters, including a cast of borders with Theo the Samba Dancer, Dr. Jakes & Dr. Smith as a pair of (lesbian?) former academic professors, and the enigmatic Madame Fidolia as the head of the art school and Posy's private teacher, are wonderful.

For those who enjoy a Louisa May Alcott girls story or the occasional twists of a Dickens novel, this story set in 1930's post-depression England is a great period piece for children and adults alike.

I'm an American and I always enjoy the productions that the BBC plays. I was really excited about Ballet Shoes. I read the book when I was younger, my copy was destroyed in Katrina so I didn't have time to re-read it. So this review will be short and sweet and about the film itself. The film itself was well done, very seamless and didn't seem to leave any big gaps of unexplained information. The music really help set the mood. Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies set the mood for all the dancing, which as a dancer was pretty impressive for the three leads, especially Lucy Boyton. And Gershwin Along with Theo's radio help send in the time period (loved Theo!). The costumes and the sets were great. The acting was also fantastic. I don't remember a lot of the book, but I loved Madame Fidolia and Eileen Atkins was superb. I also loved Emilia Fox who is completely lovable and does a great job of bringing Sylvia alive. Richard Griffiths was adorable (horrible word choice, but that's how I feel) in an eccentric paleontologist way. I especially loved Theo and the Dr.'s, they were brought to life and very fun to watch.

As for the young fossil girls I have to say Lucy Boyton was my favorite. She was spunky, funny and very Posy. She showed a maturity far beyond her years. Yasmin Page was very intense as Petrova and appeared very thoughtful and intelligent. She was fantastic. Emma Watson was a little inconsistent. She had moments where she did great, the audition scene was very good, and when she acted like a prima donna she really shone, otherwise it appeared she was just reading off of a piece of paper, her performance was a little wooden and didn't do it for me. All together the three girls had a great amount of chemistry along with Nana and Sylvia they felt like a family. Overall I thought an enjoyable, CLEAN, family film. Worth seeing.

This is a cute movie. I bought it for a friends daughter since she's a super big Harry Potter fan (Emma Watson AKA Hermione Granger) is in this movie, so I figured she'd like it. It was a hit in the house! Highly recommend for a cute family movie :)

Slow paced, No sex , no action, good for 8-13 year olds. Not much ballet at all. More about theater.

This DVD version of Ballet Shoes is very good however, there are some minor things that are not the same as the book so don't go writting about the movie for your book report.

I think that they hit it right on when they casted Emma Watson for the role of Pauline and the other cast members were great. I loved Posy's character.
