Album Notes
Personnel includes: Willie Rosario, Tony Vega, Papo Lucca, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Bobby Valentin (vocals).
Spanning several decades of music making and countless groups, styles, and incarnations, the career of Puerto Rican percussionist Willie Rosario has been critically illustrious but commercially underwhelming. The bandleader has crafted a refined sound that avoids solos and concentrates on the collective combustion you can achieve by mixing Afro-Caribbean percussion with a jazzy brass section.
BACK TO THE FUTURE was recorded in 1999 with a stellar lineup of guest artists, including vocalists Tony Vega and Gilberto Santa Rosa, as well as the fluid piano of Papo Luca, one of Puerto Rico's most prodigious musical talents and leader of his own Sonora Poncena orchestra. Luca shines on two instrumentals, the volcanic "Satin Lace" and the more delicate "No More Blues," a composition by Brazil's Antonio Carlos Jobim. Luminaries aside, the record belongs entirely to Rosario, who has crafted a sophisticated smorgasbord of Afro-Cuban delights.
