Album Notes Squeeze: Chris Difford, Glenn Tilbrook (vocals, guitar), Jools Holland (vocals, keyboards), Keith Wilkinson (bass), Gilson Lavis (drums). Producers: Eric E.T. Thorngren, Glenn Tilbrook. All tracks have been digitally remastered. BABYLON AND ON is Squeeze's second album after reforming in the mid-'80s (their return was heralded with the release of COSI FAN TUTTI FRUTTI in 1985). This is a solid band effort, with all on board clearly back in the swing of things. The results mark a certain peak for the group. Here, Squeeze fashioned a fully engaging album, with hooks that make sly demands on the attention of the listener. The dazzling "Hourglass" was a minor hit. "Hourglass," as well as several other numbers here, revels in Squeeze's signature sound: idiosyncratically structured choruses made inviting by the enthusiasm of multiple voices. "Tough Love" presents another one of their finely detailed little vignettes, while "Trust Me To Open My Mouth" offers a narrator flawed in familiar ways. For all of its endearing familiarity however, BABYLON AND ON is a unique addition to the band's discography.
