The most helpful baby name guide

Most baby name books pride themselves on how many thousands of names are listed within. We found, though, that "20,000 Names" meant, for us, "19,990 Horrible Choices and 10 OK ones." It's not enough to know the Old English root of a name--parents today want to know whether there will be 4 other girls in her kindergarten class by the same moniker, or whether people think the name sounds like a criminal or not.
Pregnant with our second child, we were at a loss to come up with names. We visited friends, who loaned us this book and, one long car trip later, we had working choices for both a girl AND a boy--no small feat for a couple of picky teachers. We liked it so much that we bought another copy for ourselves and have recommended it to everyone we know who is expecting or considering a child.
The best features of The Baby Name Wizard are the graphs showing current and former popularity and the name categories. Somehow Wattenberg has managed to make name choosing seem fun, non-judgemental, and brutally honest, all at the same time. Reading the book, with its well-written explanations, humor, and interesting notes about trends and categories, is like having your smartest friend help you name your baby. After all, it's one of the only parenting choices that will last for a lifetime.
