A Good Resource for New Parents

I bought this book because, being a first-time mother, my midwife strongly recommended I have it. It contains information on nearly everything about your baby from birth to toddler years, including feeding, health, behavior, growth, sleep and child-rearing. I love the perspective of the authors: they are from the medical world itself (being a doctor and nurse), but are also wary of its dangers. You know you're getting a balanced view of medications, interventions, etc. Beware, though, of their parenting philosophy: they are strong attachment parenting (AP) proponents. They encourage unrestricted feeding, slingwearing, co-sleeping and not letting the baby cry. I'm not making a judgment call on that style of parenting, but simply stating that this parenting philosophy slants ALL of the advice they give. Be aware of that and filter information accordingly.

  Excellent Book. All wonderful advise!

This book is wonderful! Great advice, probably more insightful than my pediatrician. It helped me with breastfeeding my newborn (read the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding too) and with other things that I might have called-and subsequently visited-the pediatrician for. For example when I thought my child has a cold, it was really just some mucus that needed to come out, the book told me what to look for to determine what the cause was and how to use the eye-dropper and aspirator to "hose his nose". I read it during my pregnancy and it really prepared me for a lot of things. And now that my boy is here I'm devouring the section on the developmental stages. LOVE THIS BOOK! My research shows me that its written by an extremely reputable source: Dr. Sears and his wife, inspired by their practice and many kids. Next to moms' advice that book is IT. Its based on the fact that babies are a gift to us to be cherished and loved and given the best, which means it advocates: Breastfeeding for as long as possible, Baby Wearing, Against Crying-it-out, and love love love. This book is way better than "What to Expect the first Year" (and honestly "What to Expect When your Expecting" wasn't all that great). That book was written without an opinion, but its over all feeling is very antiquated, and by that I mean it would be good for a "Non-Attached Parenting" kind of mom.

I absolutely love this book. I wish I had bought it sooner. I did not purchase this book until my first daughter was 4 months old. I had been reading Dr. Spocks book. Horrible! This book completely blows that one out of the water. Great detail, wonderful breastfeeding support. I had been nursing for 4 months and learned an amazing amount about nursing I didnt know. I would recommend this book to any parent, new or old.

I bought it and it never arrived. The seller had then closed their account with Ebay. I had to file a claim with Paypal to get my money back. Not a good experience.

I belive it's the most useful, practical, common sense, warm and up to date comprehensive book on parenting and baby care, I've come across. Unfortunatelly for parents from my country, we don't have it translated into our language (Slovene).

  This book is AWESOME!

I would definitely recommend this book. It is probably the best baby book I've read. I love that it is written by a doctor and nurse couple with tons of kids of their own. I love the little stories that are interjected from their own lives. It's written in such a way that even if you don't agree with some of the ideas, you don't feel like they are pressuring you to think like they do. I believe it says in the book more than once that you should read other things and make the decisions based on what works best for your family. I first read this book after my first son was born, and had loaned my copy out to someone. I missed it as a reference, so I knew I needed new one after the birth of our second son! I actually bought a total of 3 copies of this book because I love it so much I wanted my sister to have one and I wanted one on hand for the next time a friend is pregnant...

  Guide for mom & dad.
Review created: 03/06/07

This book is a great guide for moms and DADs. It's easy to read and covers everything for parents who look for a more natural apprach to childrearing. Other books are a little too sterile and noncommital. The authors are in medicine and have lots of children. It's a wonderful reference for years to come.

The book was in good shape, a little bit dirty, but nothing a little wiping off didn't fix. It arrived within the expected time that was given. I am pleased.
