Description
One of two original satellite-released Zelda creations, BS The Legend of Zelda was a special remake/redux of the classic first chapter in the Zelda franchise. An early example of episodic gaming, BS Zelda was a 16-bit upgrade of the original NES hit Legend of Zelda, but with completely redone stages and item locations (think of it as the lost "Third Quest"). With each weekly installment came new dungeons, gameplay objectives and items. For example, the first dungeon was completely redesigned into an "S" shape and the item collected was a boomerang instead of a bow and arrow. It also featured something called "Sound Link" -- every few minutes the players were cautioned to listen carefully as a live narrator (broadcast over the satellite network) who gave them play clues. The game was broadcast in August 1995 and then December 1995-January 1996 over two four-week sessions across two unique versions of the game world. In the end, players were ranked according to how well they did in the game, and could win real prizes for their success.

Both this game and BS Zelda: The Ancient Stone Panel featured a different character from the usual hero -- instead of playing as Link, you get to be "yourself" in the land of Hyrule, using your log-in name for Satellaview and the Satellaview mascot character as your stand-in (male or female) for Link.
