Description
One of two original satellite-released Zelda creations, BS Legend of Zelda: Kodai no Sekiban was a special "timed" version of A Link to the Past. This was set in a new version of the game world, with a quest to collect eight Stone Panels. An early example of episodic gaming, the game would expand its play area during its four-week run between March 1997 and April 1997.

This Satellaview quest was played in "realtime" with other players (none of whom were actually in the game -- you just all were playing this special Zelda game at the same time, in around the same various areas.) Although it could be downloaded, Kodai no Sekiban could not be played "offline" because of the realtime features. The "broadcast" play featured an advanced version of the "Sound Link" feature -- cutscenes and special character moments were narrated by live actors (broadcast over the satellite network), while the game moderator would urge players on and give out play tips as all players explored. With only one hour of playtime per broadcast, players needed to divide up their time between exploring and collecting prizes on the overworld, taking on side-quests, or venturing through the dungeon to find the Ancient Stone Panels. In the end, players were ranked according to how well they did in the game, and could win real prizes for their success.

Both this game and BS Legend of Zelda featured a different character from the usual hero -- instead of playing as Link, you get to be "yourself" in the land of Hyrule, using your log-in name for Satellaview and the Satellaview mascot character (male of female) to become the "Hero of Light" embarking on this adventure in the place of Link.
