Nice motherboard for Core 2 series processors
Review created: 12/01/09

I bought this item used because I had specific needs and a limited budget for this build. All the new boards in this price range and even for twice as much would not meet them. I wanted a board with at least 32 PCIe lanes. The 680i chipset has 46, 2 16x, 1 8x, and 6 1x. This board has 2 16x, 1 8x, and 2 1x, I assume the other 4 are used internally. I wanted to use the full 16x for the graphics card and have the 8x used for a RAID controller. Problem is with most motherboards under $150 at the time of writing is that they use the P45 chipset, which only has 16 lanes. Adding the RAID card would drop the graphics card down to 8x, resulting in lower performance. Also there was an issue with the compatibility of the Dell SAS 5/IR RAID card and Intel chipsets resulting in memory not being detected or the system not POSTing. This board gives also gives me the option to add another RAID controller if I want to add more drives or go for some 2 graphics card setup in the future. Other features that drove me to purchase this board are:
Onboard firewire (1 on the back panel, 2 more can be added with the included breakout cable)
10x usb ports (6 mobo, 4 on breakout)
Serial port (breakout cable)
Optical audio out
4 DIMM slots for RAM
Large heatsink and pipes over chipset
Onboard digital error code readout (so useful when you power up and get no video!!!)

Some features I didn't care about but others might value:
Legacy PS/2 ports so you can use that 15 year old mouse
6 onboard SATA ports with RAID
1 PATA port, can be RAID'd with the SATA
7.1 analouge out

Things to watch out for:
It takes a good 20 seconds from hitting the power button until anything comes on the screen, I thought it was broken the first time I powered up
The manufactures "strongly recommend" a PSU with a 8 pin connector, I used a 4 pin one and had no issues
This motherboard is rather large compared to most, so you need a large midtower or a full tower house it comfortably. I use an ancient beige, steel full tower.

In case you care, here are the specs of what I built (mostly from eBay, of course :)
4x Seagate Cheetah 15K.4 73GB 15000 RPM SAS RAID0 (dirt cheap these days)
4x 2GB of off brand RAM
pulled LG SATA DVD+RW drive
400W Antec PSU
MSI R4890 Radeon HD 4890 1GB "cyclone"
Intel Core 2 Duo E8600
