The Aviator (DVD, 2005, Full Frame)

Martin Scorsese ( The Departed, Casino, The Color of Money - 1986 Edition,
Taxi Driver, etc) directs this Best Picture nominee from 2004 about
Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio), who turned a small fortune into a
massive one by producing such classics as Hell s Angels, The Front
Page, Flying Leathernecks and Scarface. He simultaneously branched
into and transformed industry after industry including aviation by
designing and having built several ground-breaking types of aircraft.
Movie won five Oscars, including Best Cinematography, Art Direction,
and Best Supporting Actress (Cate Blanchett). DiCaprio does a great
job of acting here, especially the part as Hughes becomes increasingly
paranoid as he ages. A very good movie that will fill a nights
entertainment for most people.

I was around when HOWARD HUGHES was making headlines and this movie is a realistic sensational story of his life. Director SCORSESE deserved the Oscar, and LEONARDO DICAPRIO was excellent as Hughes, but as many others at first ,I did not think Leonardo could fill the part. Hughes loved making Movies and Airplanes. And many of the leading ladies of Hollywood,including Kate Hepburn,Ava Ginger Rogers and a teenage Mary Murphy,etc,etc..And as it truly happened, when things went bad ,the film then truly depicted Howard with that mustache covering his scarred lip from his experimental-test plane crash,(a sensational production bit that cost a bundle $$$ just for those few minutes..) and that famous frown to the end of the film when Hughes re-treated to his private "quarantined" hotel room until death. He suprised all, came out to testify in the senate hearing that he had NOT taken money from the government,then delivered no planes. But,he proved he had tried to deliver,except WW2 ended and the government then would not complete the purchase. Hughes then to prove his critics wrong again.. went out and flew his giant experimental larger then any airplane "Spruce Goose" made of wood(since he could not get any needed metal to build it during WW2)-- only a few feet above the water in Los Angeles Harbor to prove it WOULD fly, the only time it did,since the Air Force didn't need it. His giant plane became a living museum,visited by hundreds even today. Beautiful Production. Fun to Watch,great Classic sound-track Songs..Holds close to detailed facts..great Performnances by all,and-- "The OUTLAW" film that I remember had the censors slamming HUGHES for those certain scenes causing him to hold up the release for a year, until it was ACCEPTED by the public as just another western movie.. only the film-critics with their thumbs-down,and those risque scenes so timid today almost being funny by today's movie standards, since in this movie we are simply not too shocked to hear some suitable placed four-letter words. "THE AVIATOR" is a great film. Our Thumbs-- UP all the way, and the Howard Hughes story here is.. a High-Flying Superb Movie Slice of Film Entertainment..! (JC)

I'm from Long Beach CA so I heard about Howard Hughes all the time as a kid. I wanted to know more about his life because he had been an icon in our town growing up. This answered all my questions, and I liked the movie too. Action, drama, special effects, all good. Check it out.

Howard Hughs the legend, the mystery man, all made human by this film. I saw it in the Theatre and was enthralled. Leonardo DeCaprio does an excellent acting performance.

I found this movie to be rather disconnected and difficult to follow. None of the characters were particularly likeable or friendly, and the whole movie jerked from scene to scene. The story of Howard Hughes' life is a fascinating one, but this movie didn't do a thing to inspire my interest in one of history's most legendary aviators.

I wanted to see this movie when it was in theaters, but missed it! When I heard that the movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, and that Cate Blanchette won for best supporting actress, I decided to buy the DVD.

Wow! It's rare that I see a movie that both educates and entertains like this one. Before I saw the movie, all I really knew about Howard Hughes was that he became a nutty, wealthy hermit. The movie showed me that he was not only nutty and rich; the man was brilliant. The acting was great, with well-known actors in near cameos, and the special effects were totally believable. I also loved the music from the 1920's, 1930's, and 1940's.

The 'bonus features' included with the 2-DVD set are phenomenal, and include an entire History Channel biography of Hughes' aeronautical achievements. There are also segments dealing with OCD--how it is treated today, as opposed to Hughes' undiagnosed case. I may have developed a little OCD myself--I keep asking people over to see The Aviator so that I have an excuse to watch it again myself.

As someone with OCD, I have always been intrigued by Howard Hughes and his life. I’m just glad to see a movie about all of the good things that Hughes accomplished rather than a movie just about Hughes as a crazy person with long fingernails.

I thought the cast did a great job bringing the story to life. The story is one we don’t hear about every day. Though it was long, I figure that it evens out with all the hour and a half movies out today. At least with this movie, you got your money’s worth.

I bought this movie DVD the week it came out. Bought it at wal Mart. Paid alot of money for coming from Wal mart. Its a really great movie based on true events. I had it three days. My gf's best friend asked to borrow it. I said NO! Because we had just bought it three nights before she asked. My gf talked me into it. Her friend Tina said i promise to bring it back in a couple of days. Bullshit? I never saw it again. And after that i had the DVD case and the special features disc only. It took my remebering that we once had the movie and looking on ebay for it used to replace it. Found one and won the bid. Love it. Thank you to the seller

Great flick. Leo out does himself each time her steps in front of the camera. you will KNOW Howard Hughes when you see the performance DiCaprio gives. That being said, don't think I'd care to know the man in retrospect?
A must watch for Leo's passion and Howards'tragedy!

Rather disjointed but enjoyable. Held my interest and, if true, revealed some interesting facts about Howard Hughes. Bought it because the price was right.

Although the movie is not politically correct on its timeline. If you are well read on Hughes you will catch the way they jumped around and add libbed. The props in this movie for the era are awsome.

This is an absolutely spell-binding story of a man of genius and exploration into the field of AIRPLANES and his involvement into the world of Hollywood with it's drama and craziness. Fascinating!! The story of Howard Hughes.

i like this movie. it long but i like it. some part of the movie doesnt make sense but i like it. a great movie if you wanna watch a movie on a friday or saturday

I bought this dvd because I enjoyed the performances Of Kate and Leo.They both
portrayed Kathryn Hepburn and Howard Hughes with class.The test-flight of Howard's shiny chrome speed plane was my favorite part.I also thought Leo truly
captured the fallen mental state of HH.

My husband liked the movie but I didn't like it. It was a bit slow and boring for me. My husband finished watching the movie but I fell asleep at the end. So the ending might have a twist or something I didn't see, but I wish I had bought something else. I have trouble going to sleep so if it put me to sleep that is BAD. It was just dull, it had some informational value but not really my type of movie. It is worth watching if you get it given to you or someone lets you borrow it, but I would not spend my money on it.

i liked it cause it came with movies i didnt have. 2 was nascar movies. after recieveing my movies i noticed i didnt get one of the movies so i told him and then he sent me that plus another movie for free. i would deal with him again anytime.
