I make a point to watch this movie once a year, I love it and so do my parents.
I am forty nine years old and my parents are in late seventies and early eighties.
A nostalgic film about life of Polish immigrants in America I suppose around the 1940's, maybe earlier not sure. See how families struggled, suceeded, helped each other, grew together and apart.
What I love about this film it takes me back to when my mom was young and lived in New york, daughter of immigrants from Spain, and how she relates to the activities in the movie, her eyes light up talking about parades, and going on picnics, and friends at the spanish club, similar experiences.
This film also reminds me of my husbands family, as they are immigrants from another part of the world and have very similar customs to those in the film to this day! Large families, eating together, having fun and good times and quirky in there own way.
Me, as an American citizen from birth but having lived in Spain until the age of sixteen, when my parents moved back here, it was a foreign land to me, seeing part of the cotidienne history of everyday life in film, in a comedic kind of way makes it very enjoyable, like real life.
So instead of renting it from on demand every year I decided to have it on hand so I can watch it whenever we want and also take it with us, convinient. I am thinking of purchasing a couple of extra copies for gifts to my sisters that live abroad, just have to find the right format DVD.
Not your wow movie just a different family movie, in the venue of My Big Fat Greek Wedding not as good though!
