Gilberto Santa Rosa has a career that began in the mid-1970s and an unassailable reputation as one of Puerto Rico's premier soneros, or vocal improvisers. His 2004 album, AUTENTICO, reinforces his status with a collection of tunes that vary from the white-hot attack of "Lo Que Arraso" to the Brazilian-influenced "Ensename a Vivir Sin Ti." The common denominator here is Santa Rosa's nuanced delivery, subtly elegant on the sophisticated after-hours ballad "Sombra Loca" and impassioned on "El Rincon De Mis Ansias," but consistently masterful, whether he's indulging in flights of improvisational fancy or putting his authoritative stamp on a lyric. The arrangements on AUTENTICO are fiery and swinging, with a distinctively traditional Puerto Rican flavor; the vocal and instrumental prowess displayed by Gilberto Santa Rosa and his band put the performer in a class by himself.
