I loved the setting, pre WWII and early WWII in the outback of Australia. The cinematography on the epic Australian film was amazing, The story line was heart grabbing and held you to the very end. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman were perfectly cast as a rich & proper English lady who came to the Outback to "straighten out" her late husband's cattle ranch. Hugh Jackman was the wild Rover who was hired to help her accomplish a cattledrive across the rugged outback to sell cattle to the army. Another cattle Baron is determined to thwart their drive thus keeping his cattle monopoly with the army. Japan's aerial bombing of Syndey Harbor and the ensuing hardships make this a movie to see.

In November my husband and I visited Australia. The upcoming movie was all the "buzz" there. About the time we got home, the AUSTRALIA movie was released here in the USA. Of course we HAD to see it ASAP. We saw it at the theater and really enjoyed it----so much so that we wanted to own it and watch it again. The movie is wonderful. The scenery spectacular, the acting is marvelous, the story line is historic and factual (the WWII invasion and the Aboriginal treatment) ...We think it is interesting and enjoyable---as well as humorous in parts and of course romantic! My husband and I love it! It may be a long movie but it goes by really quickly.

  A must see movie

Full of action. I enjoyed this movie and feel Nicole Kidman did an outstanding job. It portrayed life in the early Australia in such a way that you can really appreciate the hardship that the people encountered, and still encounter. I had not realized that the Japanese bombed Australia during the same time period that they bombed Pearl Harbor, destroying so much. This is one that I will enjoy watching many times over; not just a one time and that was enough type of movie.

I have seen bits of the movie but never really sat down and watched it beginning to end because it didn't seem like my kind of thing. However, I watched it and fell in love with the characters and story line. It was a very touching movie and shows how hard life was back in the days. Definitely worth watching! Even if it does go for three hours.

Loved the entire movie! Set in pre WWII Australia, a woman goes there to bring her husband back to England and what she finds is a beautiful adventure. Scenic and captivating, the Australian Outback and native people have a story of love, connection, nature and good vs. evil. It isn't a typical period piece and offers all viewers and ages fabulous entertainment. An excellent movie!

Once past the first 45 minutes, a great epic film!
Review created: 05/08/09

I am not certain why the idiotic, supposedly comedic first 45 minutes is a part of this epic film; it is almost a farce. HOWEVER, once past this section which does have some historic, back story information, the film is wonderful, especially the little abo/anglo boy. Kidman and Jackman do have a wonderful chemistry and the fact that Australian actors were used against the dramatically beautiful Australian landsacape and the Japanese attacks against northern Australia make the film a joy to watch. We loved it and are so glad that we now own it.

I love this movie! What's unfortunate though is that I bought it from an ebay seller and never got it! I had to file a claim with paypal and got my money back about two five weeks after I purchased it. (paypal was fast with the refund though)Strange thing is that I got dooped by two other dvd sellers the same week! Paypal refunded my money on all the dvds, but it still sucks to not have the movies I want!

This was not a real offer. Just someone trying to steal money. $10 at a time. Hardy worth it. There needs to be a better way to screen sellers.

  The beautiful Outback

This romantic period adventure stars Nicole Kidman as an English aristocrat who inherits a sprawling ranch, and Hugh Jackman as the rough-and-tumble cattle driver who helps protect her property from greedy English cattle barons. As the pair attempt to herd 2,000 head of cattle hundreds of miles across the treacherous Australian outback, they are stunned to bear witness to the bombing of Darwin by Japanese forces -- who just a few months prior launched a devastating attack on Pearl Harbor.

This movie will go down as one of the all time greats and you can let your kids see it. The spectacle , romance and adventure will keep you glued to the screen. It will be over too soon. When you watch, have some Kleenex near by.

I loved this big, action-packed adventure which allows you to escape into a period of time that was during my parents early years. The color is magnificent to behold. This is one of Nicole Kidmans finest films. Hugh Jackman is one hunk of a man! Buy it, Own it & fall in love with it as I did.

  "THIS LAND HAS STRANGE POWERS"
Review created: 03/04/09

Features Actors:Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman,Bryan Brown,David Wenham & Brandon Walters
Running Time:165 Min.
Rating: PG-13

Nicole Kidman is Lady Sarah Ashley, a cash-strapped aristocrat who suspects her bush-hopping husband is up to no good in Australia, and flies down to confront him. Her driver from the city to the ranch is Drover (Hugh Jackman), an independent contractor of sorts that Lady Ashley convinces to stay on board after she discovers her husband has been murdered by an Aborigine tribesman and her ranch hand, Neil Fletcher (David Wenham), is a mole for local cattle baron King Carney (Bryan Brown). Carney wants Lady Ashley’s land, but Fletcher just wants revenge, and neither is above exploiting the welfare of Ashley’s mixed-race “creamer” boy Nullah (Brandon Walters) in order to get her to knuckle under. (Mixed-race children were separated from society at the time as a means of keeping the blood lines pure.) But Lady Ashley proves to be a ferocious competitor, winning the hearts of Australia’s more free-spirited elite, and ultimately the love of the loveless Drover. The military's buying cattle in Darwin, but with the foreman gone, Sarah isn't going to get her herd there, at least not without the help of Drover (Hugh Jackman, Van Helsing), a drover (naturally), and the rest of the station hands, including a surprisingly adept Nullah.Sarah's troubles aren't over when the cattle reach Darwin, though. She has to deal with the treacherous Fletcher and authorities who want to take Nullah away. Meanwhile, Japanese planes are headed for Darwin.
That’s when World War II arrives on their doorstep.

A must see in the land down under!Great acting, the little boy Nullah in this film will steal your heart and also gives an amazing performance.Hope this helps you decide. Thanks for reading! :)

One of my all time favorite movies. One of the best casting jobs I've ever seen the actors really seem to be able to put their styles together and they just click. The story itself makes for , to put it simply, one the best Australian based flicks out their. This movie has countless thumbs up in my book and comes HIGHLY recommended.

an adventure. The vivid tale and the terrain of Australia keeps the viewers
glued to their seats. I would give it a 10 for plot, actors and realism of
the movie making.

I wasn't impressed at the start of the film and the first 15 minutes were so-so, but as time went on I got caught up in it. It turned out to be a very interesting and enlightening film! There a little bit of everything in this film; humor, drama, excitement, romance, etc., but also it educates on a subject few outside of Australia would know about.
