Publisher's Note Chromosomes can be identified based on the size, shape, and most importantly, by the characteristic banding patterns generated by certain stains. Karyotypes are generated by photographing stained chromosome preparations and then arranging the chromosome pairs by number. The atlas provides a compilation of high quality karyotypes for many of the thousand or so mammals for which karyotypes have been generated. Idiograms, or drawing of the karyotypes which include systematic naming of the chromosome bands, are included when available.
