This book is not as compelling as Smith's Ladies' Detective series or his Philosophy Club series. Nonetheless, being the good writer that he is, it is worth reading and is pretty amusing.
I decided to buy this book as it was being considered as a selection for my book club for a college alumnae organization. It's a charming read with lots of dry humor and a great ending. I have also read several other books by Alexander McCall Smith which have been enjoyable. At The Villa of Reduced Circumstances illustrates many characteristics of academics in various countries and also the "customs" in certain South American Countries. A nice surprise ending. Easy reading and would be a nice read for travel, easy to carry and pack. Subtle humor. Recommended reading. oregonbev
I am a big fan of Alexander McCall Smith. This book is a very different style than his other writings. Still enjoyed it and finishing the series. Fun, sarcastic, quick read.
