ASYLUM - A Superior Amicus Horror Anthology
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.
The legendary Peter Cushing and Herbert Lom star in this horror anthology from Hammer rival Amicus Productions. Many consider this the best of the Amicus anthology films, with 4 stories written by master-of-macabre Robert Bloch, author of PSYCHO.
ASYLUM was made following the enormous success Amicus enjoyed with their previous two horror anthologies, THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD (my personal favorite) and TALES FROM THE CRYPT, both of which also featured master of horror Peter Cushing. ASYLUM took 15 weeks to film, and when it premiered in 1972 in Britain it played to sell-out crowds for over sixteen weeks. Mr. Cushing made a rare trip to the United States on a two week promotional tour, to coincide with the release of the film. Most of the film's reviews were quite favorable. I remember seeing this at the Drive In with my sister in 1972, and we just loved it!
As a fan of classic British horror, this is one of my favorites. Of course, almost all Amicus and Hammer Films starring Peter Cushing or Christopher Lee are favorites of mine. I grew up watching these titans of horror and I believe many of their films are without equal.
Get out the popcorn, turn down the lights, and prepare for spooky fun, as only the late great Peter Cushing can deliver!
