Asperger's...What Does It mean to Me?
Review created: 10/09/09

This is a "workbook" that addresses the communication of feelings and ideas from the autistic individual to "their world".
It is often difficult to understand how the Asperger's person relates to the outside world; what they feel when certain things happen, how they view their place in the family, etc.
Although I have only recently purchased this book for my family (I am the grandmother of a 15 year old grandson with Asperger's) my daughter and son-in-law have commented about how they anticipate this book to be of great value in giving their son the means to express himself more clearly and their being able to understand him with enhanced clarity.
Many books are being published to help those with ASDs and their families, but this unique "workbook" approach is one that gives both the individual and the people around them an opportunity to exchange information that can be of great value in opening channels of understanding.
Author, Catherine Faherty, has done an outstanding job of providing an excellent "learning" format into fun and functional form for all who struggle daily with the Asperger's disorder. Thank you Catherine!

  great workbook

What a wonderful book! My 8 year old (high functioning) and I go through a few pages each week. We just told him he has autism and this workbook is helping him learn what that means. "A way of thinking and being" is the definition used in the book. It is very simple yet in-depth in certain topics, like scheduling. We skip the pages that don't apply. My son likes highlighting the items on each page that pertain to him. The writer did a great job handling the fact that each child is affected differently. It gives me insight into my son's perspective.

Autism / Asperger's - workbook for home and school

My son's teacher recommended this workbook to me as something to work with my son on, he's considered as having "high functioning autism". I like the format of the book and the language the author uses to explain to someone who has maybe never heard of autism and explains the basics and goes into more depth as it goes. It also explains it to the person with autism that it's not their fault, etc.

The premise of the workbook is for the person doing it to write/circle what applies to them so it's a quick-reference guide to knowing how to talk to them, what they like, etc. at a glance and pages that don't apply can be skipped for now and you can always come back to later. It is a wonderful resource and even though I know lots about autism, it will be great for me to work on with my son so he learns about it too!

The only negative is that because it is filled with lots of great information, it's over 250 pages long. It will take lots of time to go over it, especially if the person has Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) and wants to see what they did before. It also is sort of heavy (thicker than most workbooks and/or coloring books) which might be too much for some touch-sensitive autistics OR they might actually like it and want to carry it EVERYWHERE.

This one is softback so it might not be able to take that and the autistic person would probably be very upset that their book all about them was now gone / torn up. I think I may have to get another one so I can have another one for when this one wears out just in case!
