Album Notes Personnel includes: Jack Wilkins (tenor saxophone); Clay Perry (piano); Barry Greene (guitar); Adam Nusbaum (drums). Jack Wilkins, a jazz educator from Florida who is no relation to the guitarist of the same name, covers a lot of group within the modern mainstream on this CD which features him heading small groups ranging from a trio to a sextet. His eight originals range from the intense "Hebron" and what sounds like an Art Blakey tribute ("Artwork") to some chord changes worthy of John Coltrane ("Lady Bug") and the cooking "Hat Trick." The high-powered tenor's creative exploration of Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge" by itself shows that he is overqualified to be just an obscure teacher. Hopefully the release of his debut will result in this Jack Wilkins gaining much higher visibility. ~ Scott Yanow
Editorial Reviews Tenor sax man Jack Wilkins is a bruising player who swings from the heels up....Wilkins, in spirit and sound, recalls the indomitable Cannonball Adderley....one is reminded of the classic hard-bop groups of the 1960s. There's an edgy energy that never lets up... JazzTimes (09/01/1997)
