Album Notes
This disc contains a superior collection of coloratura arias performed by the gifted singer Sumi Jo. With the exception of two arias from 'Die Zauberflöte,' the selections are from somewhat obscure French operas. In each track, Jo's flawless technique and consummate musicianship shine. The Queen of the Night's "Der Hölle Rache" is breathtaking, never hesitating, and full of the self-assuredness necessary to carry this killer off. Her "Valse tyrolienne" from Offenbach's 'Un man à la porte' is full of the good nature and joy that the character is trying to infuse in her beloved. She flies up and down scales, trilling coyly, and all without any obvious effort.
Many coloraturas are capable of the pyrotechnics needed to just get through this music; what separates Jo from other artists is her individuality and preparation. Just listening to the wonderfully humorous "Ah! vous dirai-je, maman" (variations on the theme of the nursery song "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star") from Adam's 'Le Toréador' makes it quite clear that this is a high-caliber recording.
