Art School Confidential.... Another Comic Book Based Movie ????

Previously posted in our eBay Blog: Posted Dec-14-06 09:26:21 PST
Well this one flew below the radar for sure!

Art School Confidential is another Comic Book Based Movie.... that is now out on DVD

Based on his somewhat autobiographical comic, Daniel Clowes presents this Terry Zwigoff-directed view into the life of a freshman art student who just wants to be the greatest artist of the 21st century.
Art School Confidential is a coming of age film. It features such names as John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi (Ghost World), and Angelica Houston.

Other actors include Sophia Myles (From Hell), Jim Broadbent (Superman IV), Ethan Suplee (Chasing Amy), and Lauren Lee Smith (Blade, Mutant X).

Keep in mind that this is college time, and it's Zwigoff and Clowes (who teamed up previously for Ghost World). As the comic book creator says, "I can't censor myself." It's a comic book movie, but it's definitely not for the kids.

If you've got a family comic-book film in mind or if independent films (or comics) aren't your thing then this is NOT recommended viewing.

Michael

Considering the source material’s length, it may be inaccurate to say “Art School Confidential” is an adaptation of, or based on, Dan Clowes’ comic book story of the same name. Instead, it’s fair to say the movie was INSPIRED BY a four-page story that originally appeared in the indy comic book, ”Eightball” (available in the trade-paperback, “Twentieth Century Eightball”).

I loved the first half of “Art School Confidential.” The dialog is witty and realistic and anyone who has ever read the comic book (all four pages of it) can see how it inspired the hilarious classroom scenes and the scenes with protagonist Jerome Platz’s film-major roommate. The first half of the movie nicely leads you down the path of nostalgic school-day memories…

…If only the movie would have continued along this path.

Instead it takes-off in a far-fetched direction, with unexplained coincidences (Why does Jerome’s classroom buddy take him to see a washed-out art school graduate?) and awkward, under-developed plot progression (The relationship between Jerome’s love, Audrey, and star-student, Jonah, is bizarre and comes out of nowhere).

I can’t go much further into detail without revealing a major plot point (though it's kind-of obvious), but if you watch the movie you’ll understand.

...And I do recommend watching the movie.

Overall, I actually enjoyed “Art School Confidential.” The love story is quite charming and the humor made me laugh enough that I can forgive little nuisances such as plot development and plausibility...

Watch it, but don't expect a masterpiece.

I liked it because I was an art student. It was a bit dark. I love the main actor and think he will go far. Interesting.

Art School Confidential ( bound to be a cult classic)

Great acting, story line and humor. Bound to be a cult classic with one liners every other minute. Best in this type of movie since Buelier's day off. Great cross section of characters. Runs the gambit of humor, sarcasm, love and terror. This is the kind of movie that can been seen over and over again. I have run out of things to say because I am running late to work!

This is a great movie, but only if you go to art school. Otherwise realy, you wont get any of the jokes and everything will seem weird. Being from an art school, I cant get enough of this movie.

Pros
+ Off the wall funny. Crazy, crazy, crazy!!!
+ Great characters & a fun cast.
+ Oh so funny twist ending.

Cons
- Feels too lengthy & slow paced.
- Some scenes may be offensive.
- No real depth to the story.

Comments
This film not only pokes fun at the world of art but it also shows appreciation for it as well. The blend of irony & comic satire is genius. This movie breaks boundaries. It is almost like a serious version of a 'National Lampoon' plot.

Verdict
Must see for any comedy fan or anyone who has ever had to take an art class.
