"a book any dog owner should have"
Review created: 03/03/07

I love this book, in fact, I have two copies. One I keep and one I loan out to the owners of new puppies. For "special" friends, I buy them a copy of their own. I also partner that with "good owners, great dogs" by Brian Kilcommon (sp). I have two copies of that as well.
The Monks give solid advice and I credit that to an almost perfect Wheaten terrier who is now almost 5. I did refer to it again when we got our Airedale puppy a year or more ago.
It is well written, easy to follow and not without humour. I would recommend this book very highly to anyone thinking of or recently getting a puppy. I believe that many "bad dog" problems are not caused by the dog at all, but rather the ignorance of the owner.

This is an excellent book that during the time that I bred, trained, and sold German Shepherds, I recommended to all my puppy buyers. This book covers the psychological development stages of the German Shepherd puppy accurately. The advice on corrections and behavior shaping are ideal, instructing owners on how to communicate with dogs in a way that the dog easily understands. It also explains clearly to the owner, how the owner should firmly show the dog that the owner is the boss of the house, the alpha. Of all the dog books I own, this one is the one I've recommended most to people, for learning how to understand, communicate with, and train their dog.

I first read this, from our library. but it was so popular, i had to go back on the "wait" list. so, we added this one to our own book collection. great stuff for anyone thinking about adding a canine member to your family. this book is the first good step to having a well adapted, and properly socialized puppy. great tips on how to do it... all you have to do is add your own hard work, and love.

Received in a timely manner. Book was a older version that I thought, not the sellers fault. Enjoyed the book.

The Art of Raising a Puppy by New Skete Monks

I read this book several years ago when we first got our puppy. Although the monks raise German Shepherds, I found this book very helpful in training our Labrador mix. It has clear and precise suggestions on raising a puppy to be mannerly and obedient. I bought this book for a friend because she wants her new puppy to be as well-trained as our dog. I think that's a testament to this book and its methods.

A must read. Better than Cesar, though he is good too, this book gives a lot more information, excellent concepts on communication and will set you and your dog up for wonderful years ahead.

This is a great book. I have been using the techniques described in the book and my 3 month old German Shepherd puppy is already sitting on command, asking to go out to go potty, stays between my feet sitting or lying on the floor when I take her to the vet's, and walks on the leash without pulling. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Terrific book on how to raise a puppy with out cruelty.

I saw this book recommended by several websites based on the specific breed I was interested in getting. A Bernese Mountain Dog is what I wanted for years and I now have a pure bred boy. The advice outlined in this book works very well on this breed of dog. It addresses the dogs need to be led by a pack leader which is talked about so often in dog training these days. It offers real exercises to show your dog you are his or her pack leader. It is an easy read and I was hesitant to stop reading it. I wanted all the knowledge it provided all at once. The author never gave any advice about training that seemed cruel or scary throughout the entire book. My puppy has responded very well so far and seems to be on his way to a balanced and happy life. I plan on reading it over and over again. Highly recommended!

Maybe one of the best puppy raising dogs
Review created: 05/28/08

Apart from the history and the story part, this book gives great essential tips on raising puppies.

Only thing I did not like much is how Monks relate dogs with wolfs, as they don't have the exact same genetics so they don't have even 90% behavioural.

So this book is not for me the top one, maybe can be one of the best guides for this available

Great book on puppy raising. It emphasizes the importance of early handling and socialization. Also, the proper techniques for discipline and training. A valuable guide for anyone that works with and/or has dogs.

The book was in better condition than described. Very pleased with the purchase. However, the media mail took 21 days, which was within the timeframe disclosed, just on the high end. Bummer when you're anxious to receive something. Otherwise, great transaction. Thank you!

Love the book!!! Does give great insight to your relationship with your puppy. We are first time English bulldog puppy owners and believe me, we thought we were going crazy. Not so. Plus we are prepared for his future behaviors. Every puppy owner should have this book.

I had a copy of this book which I read when it first came out. It gave me a lot to think about regarding puppies and I wanted another copy to give to a friend with a new dog. My hope is that he will gain from it as much as I did.
