De La Soul originally intended to release the whole three-disc ART OFFICIAL INTELLIGENCE series in one fell swoop as 2000 approached its close. While that offering may have been a grand gesture to inaugurate the third millennium, it could very likely have wound up a grandiose offering and certainly would have increased the phat content. Based on the slick rhymes and the customary imaginative and inventive De La content of the BIONIX Posdnous, Dave (formerly known as Trugoy the Dove), and Maseo were correct in waiting a year to drop Volume 2 of AOI.
Initial single "Baby Phat," far from the standard ode to larger woman, announces that De La is still at the top of its game, bouncing safely outside the realm of cliche with a deft bassline, breathy hook and effortlessly tossed quips ("just let me watch your weight, don't let it trouble you"). Among the best employers of samples, De La constantly finds just the right backset for its olympic-sized wit, from Cal Tjader to Paul McCartney & Wings. The latter is used in the most deft rap play on Christmas tidings since Outkast's "Player's Ball," as "Simply" sweetly riffs off of "Wonderful Xmastime." Also keep an ear out for Slick Rick's mock-up of his greatest solo moment on "What We Do (For Love)."
